I have been admiring this coat since Natalie posted about it a little while ago, and it looks so beautiful on Sona in her WIW... $150 canadian + free shipping, I figure I'll be paying duty on it when it arrives, but it is so lovely and I think I would get some decent wear out of it...

I love the look of the black on white, perhaps the Cream on Black is a better look for a very pale person?

Canadian YLFers, any feedback about jcrew shipping/returns?

Hard to say for sure, but I see them both looking really nice on you with your coloring. I suppose I could be practical and say get the blue because it won't get dirty. I'm actually imagining you'd look really stunning in the white, though.

I think both could work, Emily, and I'm the last one to talk you out of this coat since I have it myself (the navy version with dark blue leather trim).
It truly is a gorgeous coat irl, very good quality, quite warm and the fit was perfect for me.

I'm in Belgium and can say that J.Crew international shipping is very fast and painless. Returns are super easy too (expensive though, but that's true for all international returns) and they are handled very swiftly.

Let us know what you decide?

They're both very pretty. Do you have any coats similar to these, though?

If I was going to get one, I'd say the more practical black with cream details. But the white one would look lovely.

Mochi - Thank you! I actually googled around and found a few pictures of pale ladies looking great in the white version. I really like the crisp contrast.

Kristin - Great question re: other coats. My current coat wardrobe consists of:
1. Knee Length, single breasted black wool coat
2. Grey Lightweight Trench
3. Black Leather moto jacket that has seen better days
4. Columbia 3-in-1 for playing outside
I bought and almost kept a purple Old Navy peacoat a short while ago, but decided it wasn't for me. I'd say definitely room for another coat in my closet...

I like these a lot, its a very classic look that won't go out of style. While I love the white, it would never be practical for me because I know I would manage to dirty it in the matter of days(but that's me).

I think you can add another coat and since you returned the peacoat you have room for a shorter coat. I love both of these but am partial to the white even though I know it is impractical. It feels unique to me and classic enough to have for many seasons. I suspect it is dryclean only, so given that both would be great, perhaps it comes down to lifestyle. I cannot help on the duty and brokerage question as I haven't ordered to Canada from them.

I would go with the white one, it's gorgeous. J.Crew makes lovely coats. I'm in Canada and shop from J.Crew fairly regularly. They will include the duty and taxes in your order total before purchase. These will then be reimbursed upon any returns. I've had no difficulty returning to J.crew. Must be done within 30 days though, and you have to pay for return shipping. I use Canada Post priority.

Oooh, it would look lovely on you! Both would be great but there is something special about the crispness of the white with black trim.

Sona has one too? I need to find her WIW! I hope you get one!

Oh, by the way, I think this one is final sale, I don't know if you can return it. I would double check the size before you order. I ordered a 4 which is my typical size for tops/coats.

I've shopped J Crew online for a couple of years now (at the insistence of my DIL) and have never had any problems. The total on the shipping order is the total that is billed to my credit card, so there are no surprises. Returns are easy, although I do have to pay shipping, but the credit card reversal usually takes place quite promptly. The package arrives by courier within 7-10 days. All in all, a good experience for a Canadian shopper. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Nordstroms; I love the store, but hate online shopping from Canada--the brokerage fees are crazy. I'll wait until they open up their Canadian stores before I shop with them.

By the way, I've never seen an added duty charge on my billing, just the GST addition. The Canadian prices are a bit higher than the US prices, so I think duty is included when you view the site using the Canada option.

I think I am going to go for it, in the somewhat impractical but completely gorgeous white/black. Now the only question is which size... Got some good advice from Sona to size up so that I can layer underneath. I usually wear a 4 in tops at BR, and the ON jacket that fit well was a small, but other than that I don't have much outerwear to compare to. Thoughts? Size chart says 4, but I wonder if I should size up to 6?

I am so glad you're going to go for it - it's a beautiful statement coat without being OTT. Classy, subtle, and will be in style for a long time. I always size up in coats because I have big shoulders.

I think it depends on how broad your shoulders are. If you are an IT like Una it makes sense to size up. But I tried a 4 and a 6 (you can see my K/R pics here: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....cs-for-zap) and the 6 was too big in the shoulders. The 4 is definitely a tad snugger in the arms but the 6 felt too big in the torso and shoulders. I normally wear size 4 tops, but lately size 6-8 to accommodate my bump. I haven't shopped at BR lately but I think I'm between 4-6 and S-M there.

Since it's not final sale in Canada, can you order two sizes and return one? (When I ordered mine, it says final sale on the web page and on the receipt so if it didn't say that you should be OK) I get what you're saying about the room for layering, but if it's too big in the shoulders it looks funny. This jacket seems like more of a slim layering coat--it's short/cropped and almost like a heavy blazer, so I think it might look funny with multiple thick layers of sweaters underneath. I'm planning to wear it with just one shirt or sweater underneath.

It's a lovely jacket and would look great on you. I do think it sounds as if it might be a bit impractical for our climate, though...depending what your needs are, of course. But I get the impression it's a bit betwixt and between - neither an indoor jacket nor warm enough really for our outerwear?
