What do you think of this Talbot's velveteen jacket for the holidays?

I'm starting to put together some potential holiday outfits (I need several), and spied this jacket which is currently 50% off (and I have a 30% off coupon from the latest catalog).

What do you think of it in "raven"? Ideas for styling so that it's funky not frumpy? And could I wear this to work after the holidays are over?

I've got one reserved at the nearest store, so if you all approve, I'll go try it on. Talbot's jackets generally fit me better than any others (I have 3 of their jackets and 2 of their coats), so I'm confident that the fit would be good.

Looks really nice to me, Sarah, and I think that colour would be beautiful on you. What are you thinking of pairing it with?

I do think you could wear it to work afterwards, for sure. But again, do you have some ideas? How would you dress it down a bit?

It looks nice to me. Let's see it on! A velveteen blazer on its own does not say "frumpy" to me, so I guess it depends on what your definition of "funky" is.

I love velvet for the holidays, I think it is classic! I like the raven, love the vixen! I think if you pair it with funky jewelry, sparkly is good, but stay away from holiday themed items... not out to offend in my first week, but when I see holiday themed jewelry I think of my grandma.... the one who was not into fashion!!!

I think you could do this with lots of bling like a long pearl or sparkly gold necklace.

It's beautiful! You could wear it with black trousers and a gold or silver sequined tank underneath. For work it would look great with grey, camel or navy (ok, any neutral)!

It looks nice but for some reason I am unsure about velveteen... I guess it all depends on how it looks on you. What about this jacket in blue? http://www.talbots.com/online/.....=prdi27625 The colors are not as nice as for the velveteen jacket, though...

I think the risk with velveteen is that cheaper ones are sort of stiff and the garment doesn't seem to move or conform to the body in any way. But a good quality one wouldn't do that.

Sarah -- I like the colors, the stance, the fabric, and the one button. But personally I like my jackets a little longer right now. Are you happy with the length? If so, I agree it's a great deal.

OK, ladies. I'll give it a whirl. I'm afraid that one of these days when I've got the time I'm going to deluge you with a potential-holiday-outfit post!

@K2 - no need to worry about holiday-themed jewelry from me. Although i do recall a snowman necklace that I wore as a little girl and LOVED that I wish I could locate for my little girl.

@Suz - I'll try it on and see if it's too stiff looking. I know what you mean.

@Makrame - I actually am digging the thought of velveteen for the holidays.

@Rita and Claire - great ideas! I'm thinking I could either dress it way up, or dress it down (e.g., with Gap L&L's and pearls) depending on which venue I would wear it to.

@Denise - I've decided that shorter jackets actually work best with my stature (or lack thereof), so I'm OK with the length.

I think if velveteen is of good quality it may be fun to pair with contrasting textures like shiny silk or smooth leather or rough denim. The colors are great too. You should try it on and if you like it buy it and try to style it at home before cutting the tags off.

Sarah, that jacket caught my eye in the catalog. I like the look of it and it looks very flattering, especially when you click on the alternate views. It's shown in "spruce" in the catalog but it looks like that color is no longer available. The raven color looks lovely, too. I don't think you can go wrong with Talbots for quality and you will be getting a super bargain. Go for it!

BTW, I just noticed something funny. The raven color is actually not 50% off, once you click on the color and size, it shows price that is about 30% off. Not that it makes a whole lot of difference but figured I'll give you a heads up.

This looks like a great jacket to have for the holidays and beyond. Like Sveta says, the texture will be fun to work with. I wonder of Talbots has a silky shell in the same color (thinking of Angie's post about same color, different texture top under a cardigan).

I love velvet! The color would be gorgeous on you and I think the cut and length should be perfect. This would be lovely for the holidays and for work. I too could see something in a satin under it for dressing up. It would look wonderful with slim jeans or even a pencil skirt. I would love to see you try this.
