Today I attended the fall trunk show at my local Talbots store. It was lead by the company's corporate stylist, and featured several local women as models. Being Talbots, everything was quite classic and leaned toward preppy (seekers of edginess look elsewhere!) but it does seem like Talbots is making a real effort to balance modern classic with trends and looking current, especially for their core clientele who are 50+. (I feel like they're being more successful with this than Chico's, and who knows what Ann Taylor is off doing right now...)

I took some notes about the trends the stylist mentioned, and some things I noticed in the model outfits, for those who might be interested:

Trends for fall:
coat length items, mid-thigh (sweaters, vests, jackets)
vests
leather
feminine accessories, and the combination of feminine with casual
mixed metals

Items of note:
reversible ruana wraps - can be worn as poncho, wrap, scarf
sweater-knit ponchos
fuller-leg pants - one style was semi-fitted to the knee then gently flared
quilted jackets and vests - vests particularly worn under blazers, wraps or coats (very New England)
animal print
crossbody bags (smaller size, but not wristlet sized)
reversible wrap-type vests
wearing a grouping of pins/brooches, esp on sweaters
fine-wale corduroy: also in boyfriend-cut pants, and blazers
pattern mixing, inspired by home decor
slouchy turtleneck sweaters
rolled-neck blouses (very 60s reminiscent)
feminine blouses - drapier fabrics, floral prints, paisleys etc.
