Thank you for this, Angie -- I did not watch so it is good to see. I hope you feel better soon!

YES to everything you said. I AGREE.

Barbara Diane, it looked very somber and I missed the sea of colour too, but the message and cause won hands down. It was the point I think.

Loved that there was less skin, all round. Gorgeous make-up.

Surprised that "Big Little Lies" came home with 4 awards - but the show is about domestic violence, which I think was the point. The Handmaiden's Tale too.

Unhappy about "Dunkirk" and "Stranger Things" not winning anything.

My faves in the pics below. My BEST of the night was Elizabeth Moss. She gave the best acceptance speech too. Viola Davis a close second, and Claire Froy third. Nicole Kidman's dress was beautiful, and her speech was fabulous.

YES. Oprah was incredible, and looked flawless.

I'm crawling back under my rock today. On the mend, but need to get on top of this gastric flu completely.

[that sucks, Angie...germs seem to be flourishing on the warmer Left Coast right now!]

Well, the message was great.

I feel like I'm stuck having to judge them as if they were at at a celebrity funeral, though. On that score, nice to see a lot of variety and some incredible fashion.

If using standard criteria for how well the dress suited each attendee, though...

I saw lots of the dress (and often, makeup) wearing the woman rather than vice versa. Thankfully video was kinder than the photo lighting.

Some great strategies for how to wear black when it's not your best color, though:

  • show lots of upper body skin
  • soften with tulle / mesh / frothy textured elements
  • put light / bright embellishments up top
  • use contrasting insets

ps I wish the LA fashion-related pro who used to tweak celeb red carpet fashion photos to better suit each star's personal color / share when they got it right was still doing that. Here's his archives: https://fireiceearthandair.wordpress.com/

Poor thing, Angie - not much worse than a stomach bug. It is sweeping DD's school and I am going to douse her with disinfectant when she comes home.

Popping in to give love to the PPL on Claire Foy's tuxedo. You are slowly converting me. I just hemmed a pair of pants longer than I ever would have for my new Christmas boots, slush and mud be darned!

Get well Angie!!

I missed the awards - and have not been actively following the news since prior to Christmas so I will need to read up on the Time's Up Movement (although I am well aware of the ongoing scandals in the industry).

From what I have seen I love Claire Foy's look!!

Oprah was inspiring but IMHO, the line-of-the-night award goes to Natalie Portman, who introduced the nominees for best director thusly: “And the ALL-MALE nominees are...”
Pardon me if I don’t get particularly excited about black clothing or stirring speeches. I’m saving my enthusiasm for some actual progress with regard to equal pay and opportunity in the entertainment industry and elsewhere.

Ryce, I was a little uneasy about it too, for reasons I don't need to get into here. They seemed to feel empowered, which is the main thing, I guess?

From a style POV, despite the restriction to black, there were a lot of stunning looks. Some people seemed to up their game.

Angie, I loved Elizabeth Moss’ dress, too, after Connie Britton’s outfit (the poverty message relating to equal pay, I think). I would wear Elizabeth’s dress in a New York minute - pretty, classy, and covered up.

I LOVED Oprah's speech! And I am thrilled by the statement black clothing!

Angie, I hope you feel better soon! I can only suggest flat ginger ale and saltines, and lots of rest.

Hope you are recovering Angie. Best wishes.

Hope your feeling better Angie! And also loved Claire Froy's tux. I only watched Oprah's speech but that was more than enough for a great evening.
