I haven't gotten much fixed in a long time, and suddenly I have half a dozen skirts that are a few inches too long.

Would someone be able to give me a good sense of what I should expect it to cost? (I'm looking at a range of materials, some lined and unlined, so I know they will vary.)

If only I knew how to use a sewing machine!

Bonus points (eternal love, really) if anyone has a not-too-expensive tailor they like in West LA.

It depends on the style of the skirt and whether it's lined. Anything between $10 and $20.

I found the alterations here in a little town in FL more expensive (and badly done!) than at home in CA, so costs might really just vary. I'd take in one you don't care so much about as a trial run before bringing in your prized possessions, if you don't already have a trusted tailor.

I would check the reviews on Yelp and look for specific comments about the work they had done (not just the "great service" review that you suspect was posted by someone's brother-in-law). That's how I found my seamstress, and she's a genius.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure the last time I had an unlined skirt shortened it was more like $5, so it's very good to know that I need to revise my expectations!

Hemming pants is around $10 or $12 in my recent experience, so I imagine hemming a skirt would be similar.

I'm in UK and I tailor for a living. For a lined skirt I charge £12 to £14 to shorten. which equates to around $20. That's for hand hemmed. Machined hems are cheaper. Skirt style vary a lot, so pleats and very full styles can be more.
