Tags on Scarves

Ginger

If you take them off, do you pitch them? File them? Write down all the brand, contents, care instructions somewhere? (I am not that organized.)

This post brought to you by the mysterious phenomenon that results in the tag being proudly on top and on display roughly two-thirds of the time I try to wear a scarf.

That second paragraph: LOL!-) That happens to me all the time too when I leave on the tag:-))

I used to always cut off the tags, didn't save them: I tend to hand-wash all my scarves or occasionally cold wash them in the washing machine, so I didn't really need to hang on to the care instructions.

I've gotten a bit lazy with the last few scarves I've bought. The tags are still on, but will remove them, I think, because it always annoys me when the tag shows...

I keep tags on, if they aren’t too prominent, but if they are obvious, an irritant, or threatening to come loose, I nip them off and toss. I don’t have a lot of scarves, and know that all but one cotton kerchief, are dry clean only - so no need to keep care instructions.

If I had a Hermes, or other ‘collectable’ scarf, I would try to keep the tag attached, or if I removed it, keep it with the box/special packaging. My scarves aren’t ‘precious’ so I’m not worried about proving pedigree should I decide to pass them on.

I have only two scarves that I can’t hand wash, I just remembered which ones I generally avoid buying scarves that require dry cleaning. But I sometimes keep clothes tags to remember a style name and I keep them with the receipts in a box.

Scarf tags are so bad, aren't they? I clip them off and toss them . I trust my ability to know how to launder or clean different things so I don't worry about care instructions too much.

I carefully remove them if they seem to be too obvious (yes, I relate to your second paragraph!), and for special ones like my McQueen scarves, I keep the tags in a little box in a drawer with other cut care tags from other garments that I keep in case I need to be reminded of laundering instructions or fabric content. I rarely consult those tags though — when in doubt I tend to hand/delicate wash or dry clean.

Whew! I'm so glad that the consensus is to take them off if they're a problem! And just to carefully keep them if they're very important, which makes sense.

It occurs to me that I've never actually washed a scarf, so the care instructions have been irrelevant. I am just a wee bit paranoid!

I remove them and try to keep some in plastic zippered bag ( mine all machine washable on delicate in the mesh bag ).

I clip and put them in my little receipt file- where I forget about them until I go to clear it out ....

I remove all labels from scarves. I do not keep them either.

I remove them with my little remover device. I have to google what it's called in English. (Seam ripper it is!)

Omigosh hello! This is a thing. Sometimes I try, but either get left with an equally ugly litte bit of tag remaining or poke a hole or end up ruining a hem seam…

Also: can we talk how to remove sewn in tags from pillows and sleeping bags? Esp the sleeping bag… I have one that has a tag that smacks you in the face all night and gets caught in the zipper…

Printed (on fabric) labels ftw (though I’m not sure how that works on a scarf—maybe on the middle of a side?

Synne, I bought a seam ripper a few months ago—can’t believe how difficult it was to locate one! I thought they were very common.

I always remove mine, with a seam ripper. I can't stand them--it's the first thing I do after I buy a scarf!

I laughed out loud when I read your post, Ginger. I had this same. exact. conversation. with myself, three days ago. I cut off the tag and stuck it in a drawer somewhere - just in case. In case of what? I don't know. I've already hand-washed it, and it's fine. And I've already forgotten which drawer I put the tag in.

And of course the tag is white... on a dark scarf... and sewn into the seam in a way that does not allow a clean excision of the tag remnants. LOL.

I hate those tags. Sometimes I cut them off and sometimes not. If I cut them off, I definitely throw them away.

I remove the big ones, which are clearly showing. The discrete ones are usually left on. But actually, they sometimes fall off after some time (from the silk scarves), lol. Does that happen to you too, or am I particularly violent with my scarves :-)?

I hate scarf tags and I carefully remove them. I feel like I need to wash scarves only very rarely and I just assume I will wash in the sink with detergent for delicates.

Thank you all! This is a great reminder. I have often experienced what you have so vividly described in your second paragraph above, Ginger. And I absolutely need to remove some tags.

In addition, I too have the problem that rachylou mentioned (sewn in tags on pillows etc.), but perhaps this will have to be discussed in another thread?

I have had scarf seams unravel when I have cut those tags, so now cut near the edge so a little bit of tag fabric remains. If it still shows too much (like white on black), I carefully unravel and pull out the tag fabric that remains with a tweezers.

I used to leave them on. Some time ago I decided they didn't belong and started cutting them off. A few mistakes--I have to be very careful.

Tags seem to end up being in the most prominent spot when I wear scarves, so I remove and discard. Delicate wash with wool wash liquid has served my scarves well.

I really like it when the manufacturer just sews the tag in with two stitches so it makes removal easy. Big heavy tags sewn into the scarf are so hard to remove and often mean I pass on the scarf because I have made holes in scarves trying to remove the tags.
