Check-in, ladies!

I made two purchases this week - a replacement skirt (longer than the original) for my black interview suit, and a teal sweater. Thanks to Kristen's AT intervention, when she arrived at the store to find me wearing a completely new suit, blouse, necklace (really made me sad to put that one back!), and shoes, and had to talk me out of everything but a top, I consider it a victory (Kristen's, not mine) to have walked out with one sweater!! Let's just say it became very clear why Taylor was out after three weeks. Once you are in the store with the clothes on your body, well ... it's a slippery slope.

LOL! Let me tell you, it was not easy because you did look spectacular in all of that, especially the necklace. (And the suit, OMG that is a pretty suit. You were stunning in it.) But I kept telling myself that if you do get the job it is not business formal so the outfit did not constitute a "need" like a second interview top did.

Meanwhile, I am not doing SYC so I am happily buying out the stores. But here is not the place to talk about that. As you were, ladies!

(I am continuing my SYC Outfit Challenge and bringing out old favorites to use in new ways with my newer items. I am loving doing this! It makes me look at my closet with fresh eyes.)

I'm out! Sorry! I went to my favourite shop, Oasis, and spotted a beautiful purple dress which I couldn't resist.

First of all, congratulations Laura on your victory. That is really encouraging. Best of luck at your interview.

I got a haircut on Thursday and I have to say that in 5 years with this stylist I have NEVER EVER EVER been disappointed until now. It's not a bad cut, but I hate the length. It hits me at the absolute worse possible spot at my jawbone and every time I pass by a mirror my heart sinks. I feel like all I need is mom jeans and a fleece to complete the look. I wanted so badly to go drown my sorrows at the mall (but that would have required looking in more mirrors anyway..... sigh) plus the fact that summer decided to arrive finally (in the 90's all week) so even if I did buy anything I wouldn't be able to wear it.

So, I settled for shopping for a new teakettle and pot holders to accompany my new oven. Unfortunately, I can see myself in the teakettle, and with the warping I look like even more of a pumpkin head.

After a weekend of moping around the house with no make up and mom shorts, my husband suggested we go out to dinner last night. I just laughed.... "yea right, I really look like dinner material here." But I put on a cool dress, got some make-up on and fiddled with my hair until I felt confident enough to be seen in public and we went to a local wine bar and had a really nice evening.

ANd this, ladies, concludes my whining session

I've been shopping away LOL
I have two pair of cropped pants arriving today (hoping one will fit), and I bought a pair of black booties. My fall wardrobe still could use a few tweaks, but I am at the point where I need to start thinking about Winter. I don't have gaps in my winter wardrobe- I literally do not have a winter wardrobe. I'm going to be doing as much shopping as possible so that I am not cold and naked when the first frost hits, so I will just consider myself out now.

Dawn, pretty dress! I bet you will look better in it than the model does. Khris, good luck with your winter wardrobe. Is it because you are a different size than last year?

Queenie, big hugs about the hairstyle. Not what you needed right now! I am glad that you got out last night and felt a bit better. Do you think it will grow out okay?

Oh, and I did another closet orphan challenge on my blog - this time with two pairs of 90s chunky loafers that Angie encouraged me to wear, before it gets too cold.

My first story for the magazine runs this Friday. I wrote about the items I'm starting with, and what I expect my wardrobe workhorses will be from Oct. 1 to Jan. 1. It felt funny to be writing about starting SYC when I already feel like a weary veteran.

Yes, I got rid of all but a couple pieces of winter wear last spring when they had all gotten too big for me.

Laura- thanks. Yes, you're right... it sure doesn't make the SYC challenge any easier when I don't feel fab about my hair. I do think it will grow out fine. I need to post pics to get advice on whether I should go have her tweak it, or just wait it out. I do think if I stick to wearing things with collars it will help, but that really limits my selection given the weather forecast this week.

Kim, I'll post photos later! I'm sorry to hear about your hair, but it will grow out soon. Perhaps you should go back to the salon and mention to the stylist that you are unhappy with how it turned out.

Laura, at least you had the good sense to stop!! I went on a crazy spree after my first purchase...It was like i threw in the towel and I was making up for lost time!!

I am still hanging in there, I think, I did buy a small backpack. I don't know if that counts. I have been day hiking again and my regular pack is very big. I am slowly getting back into my "regular" life after my artery burst last year. Anyway, I can't carry the big backpack yet and I had nothing that could substitute, so I got the small pack. I also can't hike without a pack because I need my inhaler, water, and emergency meds. Am I just making excuses ???

I started bookmarking things that I want to get when this is over ( maybe sooner than I am planning ! ). This has given me time to go through my list every week and delete things that I no longer want or add something that I like better. I am also saving up so that the stuff I do get is a little nicer than what I would normally get. What is getting difficult is that some of those things are now going on sale and others have already sold out, so I am getting a bit antsy.

Laura, I am so impressed that you did that. I am not sure I would have been able to. When I was having the leather coat breakdown, someone suggested I "just" try it on...and I knew I couldn't. If I ended up liking it then I would "just" buy it ! ( after I quit smoking, some of my friends would say that I could have just one cigarette, but I know that I can never, ever do it. I don't have the willpower. )

Queen Mum, I'm sorry that you hair cut has you feeling so down ! The pressure of being a world leader and icon must make it even worse ! I agree that you should go back and ask for a trim if you don't like the length - though it is tricky because you don't want to insult her. In the meantime, OUT, OUT, damned TEAPOT !!!!

LOL Isabel, I'm sure even world leaders get bad haircuts - poor Kim! - does your hair grow fast? Isabel, a backpack is gear. You are safe.

Believe me, I was halfway down the path of convincing myself I needed a new suit. Thank goodness for Kristen - and she makes a good point, which is that the job I'm going for is NOT business formal on a daily basis. So a new suit really would be a waste.

Like you pointed out to me when I put back those shoes last week Laura, great job in resisting the full compulsion! It is tough when you put something on and it looks greta, only to then convince yourself to put it back. Great job with support Kristen!

QM, hang in there with the haircut.As someone who has had TONS of butchered haircuts in her life thus far, I can tell you in about a week it won't seem quite so bad. And you now know which hair stylist to possibly avoid in future...

I am hanging in thus far but really chomping at the bit to go shopping for some booties and oxfords.Plus my favorite blouse finally ripped from sheer wear and tear this past week, sending me into a frenzy to find a replacement online--no luck--so I am temped to find another blouse to be my work horse. I have a trip planned to visit my sister in NY mid-Oct and I may be jumping overboard during that trip I am trying to make it to that point atleast which will be 11 weeks for me!

Hang in there ladies. can't wait to read your first article Laura!

Laura, oooo "gear", huh ? What if I get a motorcycle license, then I BUY a motorcycle ( I have only been on one once ) and I get the leather jacket as protective gear ? ("High Honey, I had to buy a Harley for SYC ! )

Nahhh, I am too clumsy, maybe a scooter, not a Vespa, but a Razr - I could borrow my 8- year- old son's.

Palm, my personal feeling is that if you replace a workhorse piece, it shouldn't have to be an exact replica but something you need and wear and it shouldn't count against SYC. Eventually, if we all shop our closets well, things will have to be replaced. And my vacation was very easy, I was out in the middle of the woods with no place to buy anything except dead worms for bait.

I have a rather crazy day here, but I am so excited I just had to pop in and tell you girls...

Courtesy of not shopping for clothing & accessories for 27 days, I was able to take advantage of a super crazy sale and replace my digital camera!! Yippee!!! Previously, I would have spent any thing leftover of my fortnightly budget on clothes/accessories, but thanks to SYC, I haven't shopped and was able to snap up the camera.

Now just to replace my laptop... but I have a feeling that's going to take a whole lot more than just 27 days of not shopping LOL

(PS Every time I have been near a shop I have a little voice in my head saying "don't forget about SYC!"

I did a good SYC deed and somehow sewed the frayed ends of the blouse back together.A slightly bit crooked in the back now but since I tuck it often I think I am okay.

Still not out of the temptation woods though.Currently my Amazon cart is full of shoes since they sent me an email about extra 25% off pumps...aaarrgghh!!!

I can't see the SYC-breaking dress, Dawn, but I'm sure it's gorgeous!

Chewy, I can see why you wouldn't want to be cold and naked in the fall and winter :).

Queen Mum, your haircut looks fab the way you've styled it. It looks modern and fuss-free, and frames your face so nicely.

Isabel, you burst an artery last year??! I think you should be able to buy whatever the heck you need to, at this point :)!

PalmFronds, a trip to NY in the fall would absolutely do me in. No question! That will be a true test of your resolve.

Taylor, are you going to post some WIW outfits to show off your SYC-breaking spree? We can all live vicariously through you.

I have realized something about my shopping habits. I have this weird tendency to buy things I love, then never wear them. I take the tags off, figure out what would go with the garment, but then I always feel like I need to "save" it for some sort of special occasion or something. It's sort of like my SO is with wine. So I end up with this clothes museum! This SYC challenge has made me realize this, and now I am actually wearing all of my clothes, even if it's just to a boring old work meeting.

Jonesy,I have the SAME problem--I call it the "Sunday best syndrome"
Between SYC and cleaning my closet out of all things ill-fitting, I am now actually FORCED to wear some of my favorite things more often. Feels weird at first, like I am overdressed or something(even if I am not) but then it just feels great knowing I look put-together and loving what I am wearing. Glad you are enjoying your whole closet!!!

Jonesy, I have been trying to milk the artery blowout for 10 months ! When does it expire? LOL

( Yeah, an artery burst 10 months ago and I had to have 14 blood transfusions - I hope that at least ONE was from someone stylish !!!!!! )

I was just trying to justify the backpack. Notice subtle hints like "small", artery burst, INHALER.......whah, whah, whah, whah....please don't kick me out of SYC over a small pack that will carry meds for someone who is still weak ; )

BTW : I feel great and I slowly getting back to all the fun things that I love...but don't tell anyone !
