SYC dylemma

I have been doing SYC for 10 weeks now and have been a very good girl - I only got myself a pair of black booties as a b-day present and I allowed for that before commencing the challenge.

Last night I unexpectedly received a nice BR gift card from a friend as a belated b-day present. I wonder if spending it now as opposed to waiting till January would break the original SYC rules, which allowed for gifts but not for shopping. Thoughts?

I used a gift card and birthday money without feeling guilty, but I would ask this... is there anything you need, or would you have more fun waiting and treating yourself to something new in January?

I do not have a specific item in mind, but I do have a list of things I would like to try post SYC. I do not know how many of those BR/Gap/Piperlime have at the moment ( the gift card can be used at all of those retailers).

For example, I did want to try Steve Madden flat oxfords from the store and Piperlime currently has them. I have a new cashmere sweater on my list and Gap has some interesting looking options.

So I really can't decide what to do. My options are:

1. Wait till January
2. Try to find something from my list of post SYC wishes
3. Go the store and indulge in something pretty, regardless of it's necessity, since it is supposed to be a birthday treat.

I vote for #1. You sustained SYC thus long, there is obviously no gaping wardrobe hole. By late January, February timeframe, spring collections will be out. That would be a perfect time to score new stuff. Then you can apply #3 and indulge a splurge item all for spring!

Tough one, if you spend it how will that open up a can of worms? If you have strong resolve and can purchase one time for use of the giftcard but won't be tempted to after that, then go spend it and I suggest selecting one item from your SYC wish list. If you go for any ol' item that catches your eye you may end up with a piece that requires more purchases to finish off the outfit for it.

Tanya, it was a birthday gift, so I think you should do whatever you want with the card. After all, you treating yourself was obviously your friend's intent in getting you the gift card, so I say take it to the store and get whatever you want. If it turns out you don't really want anything, then save it. Have fun!
