SYC Challenge: Two Looks

Okey-dokey, post #2 for me here! It's funny about the pictures: I feel like one outfit looks better in person than in the pic, and the other outfit is photographing better than I expected it would...

Anyway, here's one look, with a particular skirt, that I wore in the spring to teach. I'm pretty sure this is the same skirt that Rosie has; she refers to it as her "pretty-ugly" skirt or something like that. It's unusual for me because it's the first pink thing I've ever purchased!

Pencil skirt: Talbot's
Jacket: Banana Republic
Tank top: Loft
Brown boots: J. Crew

The second outfit features the same skirt; I wore this today to a meeting (this is the one that I thought looked better in person, but oh well!).

Skirt: Talbot's
Chambray shirt: Converse One Star for Target
Heeled sandals: Gentle Souls
Dark green beads and miscellaneous silver necklaces from a few random places

Fabulous skirt! I love the first version. I think I would tuck in the chambray shirt and wear a skinny belt in the second one.

Thanks for the suggestion! I like the idea, but I think I have this fear that I am too short-waisted and top-heavy to pull it off...I do have a few pencil skirts that sit a little lower on my waist that I tuck shirts into, but this particular one sits right at my waist and when I tuck into it I feel a bit like Dolly Parton. Hmm...off to experiment!

I'm with Bella. Have you tried tucking the chambray shirt into the skirt? I see no short waist challenges.

Gorgeous skirt, I love the colors. Love both looks, I can relate to the short waist issue. If you don't feel comfortable tucking, perhaps a lower slung belt over would do the trick (that's how I would have to do it, I'm extremely short waisted and broad).

I like the first look on you. This is one grabbing attention skirt!
For #2 I also vote to try tucking or adding a belt. If you do not feel comfortable for any of these options maybe try another top, shorter and with waist definition?

It IS a wonderful skirt - very pretty and very flattering! I especially like the fallish outfit with the boots. Don't forget to try it again with darker top and a denim jacket or a dark leather jacket (if you have them). I can also picture the skirt and boots with a turtleneck under a jacket. . .

I agree with others' comments about belting the chambray shirt. I usually don't tuck in, and instead put a skinny belt over the shirt, slung just a bit below my waist. This might work for you too. . .

Thanks for all of the comments! I appreciate the killer rating on the skirt, Angie :). It's funny, I do belt shirts when I wear a-line skirts, but somehow I thought I could get away with untucked, slightly longer shirts with pencil skirts. Now I see that the pictures don't lie!

Last night I tried tucking in, with a belt, and also belting untucked. I realized that another issue I have with the tucking in--at least with this particular skirt--is my feeling that the look is somehow TSFW (Too Sexy For Work :). Does anyone else feel this way about certain pencil skirts? (I know on some other academic-clothes blogs, female faculty have actually said they don't wear any pencil skirts in the classroom.)

i can see the sexy secretary connotation with pencil skirts. apply with caution to classroom settings.

Jonesy, you look so good in that pencil skirt. I love that print! I'm having a hard time choosing a favorite. The boots are unexpected and fun in that first pairing. Your jacket is to die for, btw. Love the colors of outfit #2 too and the sandals another unexpected addition. I agree with others about adding a belt. I'm not a tucker but it might work for you. Will you post pics of your revision?

jonesy- I was in the middle of typing my reply yesterday when "poof" the power went out.
anyhow, LOVE the first outfit... absolute perfection.
I agree with the others that the blue top needs some tweaking. Since you don't want to tuck, could you try wearing a cami underneath and leaving a few of the bottom buttons undone to visually "shorten" the top?

Oh, oh - I hadn't thought about the TSFW factor, but I agree that some pencil skirts just don't belong in the classroom. The pencil skirts that are okay for classroom are probably not the ones YLFers would want to wear.

Even wearing a long, bum covering cardi doesn't always do the trick. . .
