Swimsuit shopping rundown so far

Some of my swimsuit order has arrived, and I did a try-on session last night. Some notes:

- the JCrew suit that Kyle recommended is really pretty but was a dud on me — someone with a longer torso will love it though! I seriously had like 5 extra inches of fabric at the top and in the butt, it was not a good look.

- A teal Gottex smashed my boobs down in a most unflattering way. LOL

- a one-shoulder Miraclesuit style in a multicolored reptile print was a near-miss — hubs and I like the unusual print and the concept, but there was a bit too much fabric in the top part that goes over the shoulder — it looked too top-heavy.

- Scuba suit (pic one) from Miraclesuit was a wild card order but won rave reviews from my husband. It’s true scuba fabric so not easy to get into and out of, and I’m pretty limber! But it looks cool in a sporty-sexy way, and I tried it on with my sarong pants over it and hubs said I NEED to keep it for resort vacations, so who am I to argue. It’s not the most practical suit but I do feel good in it.

The real winner so far is this bikini in pics 2-3, for which I actually had pretty low expectations:

The color is so good for me! And it fits beautifully and has the right amount of coverage. I had also ordered it in the print in 4-5 and may keep both, since my two old bikinis are ready to go and this way I have a complete replacement — on vacation I like to alternate so I’m not wearing the same one everyday. Bonus, the same style means consistent tan lines. I’m really pleasantly surprised at how much I like this style — so much so that I immediately put both of my old bikinis in the donate bag.

Finally, the one-shoulder Miraclesuit in pic 6 is a contender for a new one-piece. It’s our favorite so far, but there are more coming. My only quibble with it is that it’s very slim-fitting, which of course is part of the Miraclesuit thing — that fabric really sucks you in! But it is not easy to get into — it takes a few minutes to put it on and adjust it, and once it’s on, it is quite snug.

Oh that’s a good idea to order an additional swimsuit in another colour/print when you know it fits so well. A good fitting, comfortable swimsuit can be so difficult to find.

The scuba fabric ones look neat, too bad they’re a bit of a chore to get in and out of.

Will you be able to get into and out of the scuba suit if it is wet? The bikini looks great and is a good color. Tropical places call for color. I made the mistake of taking black and navy to Hawaii...not a place to wear darks. The light is different.

What a great idea to do the try instead at home! Bathing suit shopping in store is so challenging. The bikini colour is absolutely fab- so pleased it fits so well. Definitely a good plan to keep the print one.
I would consider whether you can get out of the scuba suit. Add a little humidity and water and it might require Houdini manoeuvres.

LOVE the idea of the scuba suit for you, and the one-shoulder Miracleesuit. I can imagine them looking KILLER! The one-shoulder looks sooooo glam!

And the bikini fabness does not surprise me! They can be much easier to fit than one-pieces. I like the supportive tops.

Thanks, ladies! The bikini was such a pleasant surprise. I think the sizing was key — I was skeptical of the size ranges they listed beyond a DD cup, but I got the smallest band size version and it fits great. If I continue to lose a little more weight, I may need to have the band taken in a little bit, but that’s not hard.

We leave for our mini vacation two weeks from today, and that really snuck up on me, so I’m glad I didn’t delay my search longer. It is a relief to have suits that I’m excited to wear!

I can both the one-shoulder and the scuba suit being fab on you. Those colors are just so you. Do you have cover-ups for all the suits? I always forget about that part till I need them.

These are all great ! For someone with a pool in their backyard, I'm surprised you don't already own 100 bathing suits- lol. I sure did when we lived in a house with a pool

LOL @ Lisa — good point! The last few years I have leaned heavily on my utilitarian lap-swimming suits. I have three, all by TYR (Finds below). But I should probably take a good look at those too, since they’re all quite a few years old.

I hadn’t even worn my other suits for the last three years through the pandemic because we weren’t gathering with other people or doing any kind of resort vacations, so I really neglected the swim capsule during that time.

And I have to be honest — It helps that I’m now seeing some positive results from months of Pilates classes and some gentle adjustment of my eating habits — it’s weird how it feels like nothing is changing for months on end, and then all of a sudden I realize my clothes are starting to fit better. That has really helped my attitude when trying swimsuits on, and it is good incentive to keep up the good habits I’m working on developing!

Darn it, J. Crew. I guess it makes sense that if it works for me it might not for you, as I have no curves and everything about me me is long.

Elpgal, I’ve been low-key looking at coverups. I have a few, some of which I have had for many years, but my old favorites are still in good shape. I tend to get simple solid color coverups or ones that coordinate with my suits’ color schemes. I have two pareos — one I got in Mexico that’s black and white print, and one that must be 20 years old but rarely worn — it’s an ombré turquoise-blue and it’s gorgeous but quite sheer so it’s sort of clashed with some of my suits. However, I think it will see new life with the blue bikini! I particularly like pareos because of the versatility — I like them twisted at the neck and tied in back, dress-style.

I also have a couple of other styles in solid black and solid white. I’m heading to Nordstrom Rack today to pick up an order of sandals I’m trying, so I may take a look at their offerings while I’m there.

Pools were open on and and off through peak Covid times, but last summer when things opened up after a brief spring lock out, there was a big return of swim folks. At one particular swim, I spotted a woman in a suit with a rear so shear you could see…too much! I approached her and in a quiet voice suggested she needed to go shopping for a new bathing suit!

She laughed and volunteered that the suit had been in her kit bag for 2 years of lockdown, and she hadn’t bothered checking!

My pool suits are good, but I should check my gym bottoms! They are ancient!

Ooh -- these are all great! I love the scuba suit! It's super cool. Also like those bikinis and it is great to get the info about sizing. So the smallest band size is 32? If it works for you it might work for me. This is typically my problem -- band sizes way too big.

I love love love the two piece suits, and that brand is new to me, which encourages a tryout! I like the idea of a halter tie instead of traditional bray style shoulder straps.

One of my lap suits went from OK to never again seemingly overnight, so I am looking at another Reebook one piece. I have to try on my bikini top and see how I like it soon. It has been two years since I had it on, and in that time I quit wearing underwire bras, so I'm afraid it will feel like an Iron Maiden.

Scuba suit has an edge that you been looking for, and one shoulder one looks very sophisticated, both are excellent choices. Bikinis are also very pretty and I bet look great on you. I have the opposite problem with one piece swimsuits, they are usually too short on me and I have to go up couple of sizes to get enough length, but then there is usually too much fabric around midsection which I hate, especially when wet. So I am still sticking with bikinis and couldn’t care less

Anchie — yes to wearing bikinis because they work for us! I do think they can be easier for fit for the extremes of long or short torso. Heck, I’m pushing 60 but if I try this on for my husband and he immediately says “you look awesome and need to keep that!” I’m definitely listening! Four suits so far got an enthusiastic thumbs up from him, and that seems like a lot to keep, but four would replace the ones I just put in the donate bag, so I’d be on track for one-in/one-out goals.

I just ordered this pareo from a seller on Etsy, who says it will be shipped in time for our trip, so now I feel like the swim/beach capsule will truly be in good shape.

I love all the swimsuits. I only wear two-piece bathing suits. They are easier to fit. I love the colour of the bikinis.
