Sweetheart neckline/ bardot top?

After seeing hourglass figures like Meryl Streep & Christina Hendricks look fantastic in open necklines at the Golden Globes, I was inspired to try on similar tops. I'm not sure whether these count as off the shoulder or not, since they're somewhere between a sweetheart neckline & bardot style. The striped version is a smaller size than the solid black. I tried them on with my culottes & some slimmer pants, so you can see how the tops work with different bottoms.

Thoughts?

The Golden Globes were inspiring in more ways than one. The open sweetheart necklines look amazing on you! You have lovely skin and the neckline shows off the shape of your face beautifully. Love, love the tips with the slim fitting pants. I vote a firm YES to this style for you. How do you feel wearing it?

It's a YAY for me! That neckline shape is absolutely gorgeous on you, very flattering, classy with a bit of glam.
I tend to prefer the solid black one for its elegance, but the design of the stripes on the first one are very beaufitully done.

@Mainelady Yes, most definitely - but I was only able to read up on the meaning & Oprah's speech after seeing the photos at a quick glance (the joys of being almost a whole day's worth of time difference away, lol!)

Thank you for the kind words, I'm blushing lol! I feel very elegant & ladylike in this style - I think the tops would look good with a classic red lip & gold jewellery, heels, a pencil skirt & my hair in a tousled bob. But the truth is that I would probably end up pairing the tops with a slightly more quirky look, like white sunglasses, kelly green shoes, a purple belt & an A-line skirt, lol! What do you think of the striped top?

But I'm just wondering about how versatile the tops are. I generally dress quite covered up - it might look intentional, but that thick band is actually my bra strap showing under the top, haha! I think the strap actually looks good with this style, though - I tried it without (like a strapless bra) and the shoulders looked too bare without anything there. Anyway, I wouldn't be able to wear them to work, so just thinking about where I could wear them to, lol.

@Aurore wow I've never been called glam before, thanks lol! Yes, I do like how the stripes are separate around the neckline, but I'm not sure about the striped top as a whole - maybe it's because it's a smaller size?

I think these kinds of necklines can be so flattering, and I really like them on you! I’d say these are winners. I can see what you mean about maybe sizing up on the striped top (I tend to like my striped tops a little roomier because I’m busty), but it all depends on your tolerance for a little bombshell in your style.

@Janet I'm not sure if it's just my eye, but do you think it has something to do with the placement & width of the stripes? The bottom part of my chest looks like it's eating some of the stripes alive, lol! I'm not sure if a wider stripe would look as flattering, though...

As far as where to wear them, you could wear them on a lunch date (even just with friends) or out shopping.

@Gigi true, maybe once it warms up a little. It doesn't look strange to have my bra strap showing (like in the picture)? Not sure I could go without a bra in such a top, lol!

Zaeobi, I think what you’re seeing with the stripes and the bustline would be lessened by trying one size up.

Oh, I thought the black top had a cold-shoulder thing going on. Didn’t realize that was bra straps — is it obvious IRL? I like the effect better than off-the-shoulder for everyday wear, personally. Off-the-shoulder seems more specifically date night material to my taste.

I think they look gorgeous on you, particularly the solid black. I’m really impressed how intentional your bra strap looks with it too. It almost seemed like part of the top at first glance!

However I do agree with you that this style seems a bit too bare for work (esp in east Asia) and is more of a night-out kind of thing. So I guess it would depend on whether you think you need such a piece. The stripe one seems more daytime to me, with the narrower neckline and more casual stripe pattern. How does that one look with a cardigan or jacket over? And would that be covered up enough for work?

Oh, plonk!— definitely go with one or both of these.
May not be for work though- need more thoughts & stylings.
The black is a great versatile special item.
But the stripe style does seem a little more covered, more everyday, & would be great with black pants/ skirts, and also black toppers, while not being a sea of black.
If you can take them home for tryons, that may help decide.

These are flattering, especially with your beautiful hair! I thought I remembered that you had some reservations about the cut and had to go back to see your older posts.

I love the combination of an angelic face and hairstyle with a curvy figure. You are SO on track for "demure bombshell".

Yes @Janet @Diana & @marble, that's actually my bra strap & not part of the top lol! I generally favour thicker straps & more supportive styles, so maybe that's why it looks more intentional? I'm wondering if it also doesn't look out of place with the striped top?

I agree that the totally bare shoulder look is a bit more 'pure' bombshell than my usual style & lifestyle (unlike Meryl, I unfortunately don't have red carpet events & awards ceremony penned into my diary for at least the next few months lol!)

@Diana & @unfrumped I've actually taken the tops home for trying on, so I might try to make them more casual & report back. A cardigan on top may be awkward because of the elbow length sleeves already on the tops, though. Any other suggestions?

@Isabel aww thank you for the boost - I don't think anyone has called me 'angelic' since childhood (if that), lol! I think putting on a little weight in my cheeks has helped with that I actually haven't adjusted my style much since getting it cut, so maybe I should try a few more 'bombshell' looks, & have my hair/ face bring it back into 'demure' territory, lol?

@marble we all want what we can't have! I'd love to have statuesque shoulders like yours that look striking in jackets & can pull off halter necks. I'd also prefer it if my collarbones were visible lol, but we all have fat distributed in different places haha!

Also, speaking of which, I just started watching 'Body Love Thread', which may help us to be less hard on our body shapes & sizes. Fingers crossed!

I think they look good on you, and would be a lot of fun for nights out or slightly dressy daytime events.
They’re a bit special because they’re not super common. I think this top actually works at its best on a figure like yours.

Oh yes!you were so right these tops are made for you.My only suggestion would be to do what the lovely ladies at the golden globes did and that is balance out the top by having bottoms that define your waist then flare out.

@jussie Yes, I like that it's a little different, but ideally I'd like to find a sweetheart neckline on a normal top somewhere (so the shoulders aren't exposed). Might just be a pipe dream for now, but it would definitely be a lot more versatile for daytime. What do you think of layering underneath this top for more coverage though? Like maybe a shirt collar & scrunched up sleeves peeking out from under the stripes?

@Cardiff girl aww thank you! Yes, the tops are cropped (natural waist length), so I think they might look nice with some flared, high waisted, sailor pants (with the rows of buttons). But the only problem is that I don't have any & I'm also self-conscious about my stomach, lol. Maybe a flared, A-line skirt that skims my lumps & bumps instead, lol?

It is a lovely neckline on you. I think your short hair makes the whole look more quirky and less bombshell (which is a good thing in Hong Kong, I gather!)
I like both tops, and think the bra straps look good with the black one. As Janet says: a cold shoulder look.

I think the tops look good with the cropped pants and the paper bag pants—slight preference for the paper bag waist pants.

Thank you! I actually just remembered that it's supposed to be my (dating) anniversary this weekend (yes I'm awful at remembering dates - I often forget my own birthday, lol!) Anyway, I'm thinking of maybe wearing this top without visible straps, even if we don't end up doing anything fancy, since this one of the few situations in my life in which it would be appropriate (I'd feel a little more comfortable dressing risqué by Hong Kong standards if I have someone else with me, otherwise I prefer to be cautious lol).

Whether I get photographic evidence for you all here, however, is another matter - that will depend on whether I can successfully rope my man into playing camereman for me or not, lol!
