Swashbuckling coat--what do you think?

So I have this 1980s red wool Anne Klein trapeze coat that I bought to sell in my vintage business. It's clearly not my size. But. I don't have a winter coat and so I wore it once last winter. My husband loved it--the drama and the RAY-ud! (If you're not American, that's red.)

The overall volume is...well, voluminous, but then it's a voluminous design,. With the dolman sleeves shortened and narrowed toward the wrist....am I fooling myself, or could I make this work?

I totally see the appeal but it does look too big even for the design. Shortening the sleeves might help - are you wearing winter clothes underneath?

Shevia -- No, but around here winter clothes is just a pullover sweater. It wouldn't take up much room in there.

I'm on the fence. I like dramatic, but it's a lot of look on your frame.

I envy you that coat, but then I'm a size 14/16 so it wouldn't be so voluminous on me. (I'm always looking for trapeze shapes when I thrift, and I would've snapped it up in a second.) As Shevia said, it seems too wide even for the style. Maybe it works better in motion? About the sleeves, I don't think narrowing them is a good idea -- as is, they echo the flare at the bottom in a pleasing way.

It's fantastic! And, I think, excellent inspiration for a coat that fits you without tweaking or compromise.

This one will make someone bigger feel fabulous. As someone big, who doesn't have an easy time finding clothing, I vote for making this coat available to someone whose entire winter it will brighten.

You need to stay warm, too. Can we help you find a coat that fits you marvelously and looks smashing?

I really like the design and the color, but I do think that the coat is too voluminous for your frame. I would look for a similar silhouette in a smaller size.

What minimalist said. You need a red coat. Even if it's just to put a twinkle in DH's eye. (Fabulous coat, BTW, just too much coat for you.)

It *is* really a great coat and I think you actually look great in it, volume and all. You must be tall, because it hangs neatly. You don't look swamped to me. I find it arty in a polished way. That said, it *is* a lot wider than you...

I love it, it’s dramatic and glamourous, like a cape.
It’s also quite dressy, doesn’t look like a « just throw on over jeans » item to me.

Beautiful coat. Sadly, this particular coat swamps you and your frame. I vote passing it on to others that might be able to wear it and we find you a better coat.

You know, after I posted the photos, I looked them over one more time and for some reason Henry the Eighth came to mind.

Thank you all so much for the feedback. The coat goes back into inventory and now I have something I legitimately need to shop for. In RAY-ud.
