Suspending online shopping

I suppose it's not a surprise, really. I just got a notice from Famous Footwear saying that in addition to their stores being closed, they are also suspending online shopping for now.

I wonder how many others will follow. I feel for these retailers caught between a rock and a hard place right now.

I hate to think of how many businesses might be out of business as a result of this; but whose mind is even on shopping right now? I have thought to browse for yoga/sports bras several times (the only article of clothing I can think of needing at the moment) and have never even been motivated long enough to put some in my shopping cart.

I hear you. I've considered supporting a local shoe store because I do want some walking shoes/sandals for summer, but not terribly motivated to put someone through delivery and possible returns...

I am trying to keep small businesses in mind too! It's a great idea. I have bought gift certificates for my hairdresser and favorite little bistro but it's overwhelming to know where to go from there.

Brutal. I think a lot will have to suspend. With so many out of work... And the market can’t direct flow of goods, even essential goods, when it’s shut down.

Sad. I feel for all the businesses. We are only buying essentials. Who knows what the future holds.

We can’t here - except for work purchases from people in the supply chain for essential services. So I can buy office supplies or components from businesses we have work accounts with. But not much else.

I can buy alcohol online too which seems an anomaly.

yes I am wondering when that will happen here,some businesses are all already suspending parts of their online operation as they cant maintain the safety of their staff in the warehouses.

It all depends on how long this virus lasts. I have 5 items purchased or ordered before the pandemic. I am keeping everything excep one pair of sandals. Was ready to take them back when the store closed. They are from DSW, sure hope they stay in business. I do have faith that the economy will rebound. after, but some businesses. may not. But for now there is no incentive to buy anything except essentials.

Lots of folks are not buying because jobs and work are drying up and disposable income is not what it used to be, and won’t be for the foreseeable future. It’s certainly cooled my jets.

Even though I’m not thinking about coronavirus 24-7, shopping is one of the last things on my mind now. But I have the luxury of a full wardrobe and have no needs for anything I don’t already have.

I am grateful to have job security for the near future (and hopefully longer term, although who truly knows what will happen). I also have the savings for planned trips that we won’t be taking this year. But i don’t need much sitting at home, and it makes no sense to me to put mail carriers and distribution centre workers under more stress just to order non essential items. Among other issues one might not think of - my friend who is a mail carrier no longer has any bathrooms to use on her route as all the coffee shops etc are closed.

I’m finding other ways to use my money and ‘support the economy’ - local, political, charitable.

I am in major shop my closet mode, and shop on-line for groceries. But if I had oodles of money, which I don't, I would try to buy from small businesses that are really suffering.

I think most of the comments here tend to agree that no one is really looking to shop right now. I wonder if we will start hearing that other retailers have also closed their online shops.

DH and I have meds shipped to us. I am almost out of one kind of insulin and will be making calls on Monday morning to see if it has been shipped I hope I can still receive meds that way as it means I do not have to go to a pharmacy. There are hardy any businesses open so most purchases will have to wait here.. I know of no small businesses that are open. All are part of large chains, but I hope to support them when I can.

Joy wouldn’t they let you into the pharmacy one at a time and no or low touch collection, payWave payment etc? That’s what is happening here.

I'm honestly a little morally conflicted about the big companies that are continuing to keep their online order systems open through all of this; reminds me of the expression to 'put your money where your mouth is'.

I had ordered something from a small UK company before the lockdown & was expecting international delivery, but they recently pulled the parcel (returned to sender) before closing their warehouse completely. It's a little disappointing but I'm on their side re: putting their workers first - helps that they've promised to hold onto my order until they reopen, too

Like Janet, even though I’m not thinking about coronavirus 24-7, shopping is one of the last things on my mind now. I am trying to spend my time productivity while not putting others at risk because they have to fill my order, ship my order, and delivery my order.

Jules -- your comment about finding other ways to use your money to support the economy spoke to me. I wish I could make a similar statement, but at the moment, I am saving my money. When this is all over, and I have time to assess my personal finances, I will figure out what I can do best to help those in greater need than myself.

I've just discovered a local boutique that I hope makes it, because they have the best necklaces and other accessories. The effects of this are going to echo for years and years. It's absolutely awful

I haven't heard of any other retailers closing (yet).

My mind is certainly on things other than shopping for clothes, although I still love to browse, pin outfit inspo, find creative ways to look pulled together, and stress about how things in my closet are arranged

I wake up every day hoping it's all a bad dream...

I think that not only are stores weighing the risks to their pickers and packers, but also wondering if they will face a huge influx of returns when they are able to reopen. And what if those returnees are infected and don't know it? We are thinking about this at the library where we have about 35,000 items checked out, and many people feeling anxious about returning them. We're going to have to quarantine those returns somehow.

Argh, this became personal, sorry. Lucky to still have a paying job, eh?

I saw a great meme yesterday - "Sure wish I had developed more hobbies than traveling and going out to eat!"

Roberta, I wondered if libraries and other places that get a lot of mail will have to invest in UV sanitizers. At least there is a limit to how long the virus seems to survive on hard surfaces.

I saw a news item that said Target has temporarily stopped taking refunds. Understandable given the sanitation issues, and not to mention they have higher priority things to do with their time right now.

I know Talbots is doing very well with online sales right now. Double what they expected.
They are one chain in good shape right now.

One of the little shops near me is letting people buy online too, but won't ship anything out until they can open back up. We have some things we need, that we haven't found locally, but haven't bothered to order yet.
