Super short pixie - stylish?

I have my regular trim scheduled for next Tuesday and am very seriously considering going super short. I find once the heat hits, I can't be bothered with extra hair and fussing with too many products, etc. I've worn my hair extremely short before so that's not a problem for me and because my hair is thick and straight, these styles work with my hair. I'm just wondering if it will be considered stylish/current? I know the trend is for slightly longer hair these days with movement. Can I "up" the current quotient with clothing and accessories if my hair isn't a "now" style?

I think you should definitely go for it. Doesn't your hair grow really fast anyway, Cut it for the heat part of summer, let it start to grow out again in mid august.

Donna - yes, my hair does grow pretty fast. I like your suggestion of going short for summer and then growing it out later. Thanks for your input.

I just cut mine this length over the weekend and I love it for summer! It may not be the most trendy but it's easy, cool and still fun, so I vote go for it if you want to.

I know Angie said that longer layers with movement are more current, but in my opinion, the short pixie never goes out of style. I think it can be a statement haircut, and you obviously have a very fashionable and current style of dressing, which eliminates any perceived dowdiness factor in the haircut. I would LOVE to have a pixie like this but it doesn't work on me - the only reason I don't do it. I'd go for it! And fwiw - don't you find that whatever the current short hair style is starts appearing on EVERYONE and that it's nice not to have the same thing as everyone else?

I hear you Lisa - I think this is one area where I'm going to buck the trend a little and be genuine to myself. Plus I'm basically lazy with my hair, especially in summer when you factor in travel, the beach, hiking...

Go for it. You look fab in short hair, and it grows quickly. I think it will look plenty current, even if it's not the trendiest look. I envy those of you who can rock really short hair. Not the best look on me.

I think mine is that short too, directly after the cut. And I love it if it's that length! I say go for it. I think you will look great.

I think you should go for it for the summer as well. You can totally rock the pixie cut and I think it will look very current on you.

I've been growing out a very short haircut for months now. I love the ease of a pixie, but it's not terribly flattering to your average 50-something woman, I don't think. Earrings and scarves and makeup can only do so much to add femininity that seems to... fade... a bit, later in life, in my humble opinion. Guess I'm the dissenting opinion today.

Chiming in for the extreme pixie! Your very stylish haircut is such a part of your look Shannon, I think you will really rock the shorter do. lisap's observations are right on point. Short hair really works with your style.

I'm very close to cutting my hair to waif pixie length. I'm tired of a chin length bob, and summer humidity just makes my hair limp. Short hair is your signature look, so own it and say pfffts to the trendinistas who follow fads.

Definitely be the boss of your hair, especially in summer.
I often like my hair best a couple of weeks after a cut, but as it nears time for new haircut, it's more work, more susceptible to bad hair day if not paid some attention. I got it cut right before my Ireland trip, and although it was not a super-short pixie, its being at its shortest truly was a blessing for being outdoors, in &out of rain showers, NO hairdryer, wearing hats and hoods. It just was not star of the show, and that was great.

Thirkellegirl - I have to jump in here .....having seen Shannon in person, she is about the last person who needs to "worry" about a fading of perceived femininity. Shannon has been blessed with a very pretty face, small features , perfect skin, etc - and this will absolutely work for her. I also have to say from a fellow short hair wearer's position, that it is indeed a cut that not everyone can wear. But I have to respectfully disagree about it not being flattering on women over 50 in general. I think we as women of a certain age need to not let "common wisdom" dictate what we wear and how we cut our hair. I'm a few years older than Shannon (I think) and in fact I feel more feminine now, at this age, than I did 10 years ago, maybe having finally grown into my face. I think we have to own our femininity and whatever that means to us - and not let it be dictated by the eye of some beholder.

Thirkellgirl - I appreciate your honest comments and opinion and I agree that it is not a look that suits everyone but it works for me. In fact, I often feel more feminine with short hair because then my small face and features show more.

Shannon, I also feel more feminine with the pixie. Even when I'm wearing jeans, a tee and sneakers... Strange, but there it is.

Lisap, it was just my personal opinion. Not bending to common wisdom is why I had really short hair for a long time after midlife. I've just done a lot of observing because I was personally dissatisfied with how I was coming across in photos when I had a pixie, and I think there's a finer line between androgynous and spunky-looking than I used to believe. It was easier for me to carry off a pixie when I was a lot younger and I don't think I'm the only one. I'm a big fan of Shannon's look and have pinned her outfits more than once. Just weighing in on the discussion, that's all.

I too feel more feminine in my pixie cut. My conservative "trying not to look frumpy" previous shoulder-length hairstyle backfired and made me look not only frumpy but ten years older than my actual age. The pixie makes me look - well, if not younger than my age, at least it doesn't make me look older than I am! It's very easy to style, and no hair crisis on windy or rainy days. And best of all, it's perfect for showing off my fab earrings!

its only hair, and as you say, your hair grows fast. so if you don't like it, within a couple of weeks it will be different.

Thirkellgirl - you are sooooo right with that fine line thing. I know if I wear my hair super short and spiky, it can take on an androgynous look and actually look severe. I definitely need to keep it on the softer side when short.

I'm a believer in being true to yourself Shannon - and if this hairstyle expresses who you are then I say go for it!

From an objective perspective, I don't think this hairstyle would be considered current or stylish on it's own. I know too many women who have cut their hair this short for years now because its easy and they can't be bothered - it looks more like a hair-"cut" rather than a hair-"style."

When this short hairstyle first became popular it was considered pretty daring to go this short - now, it seems more like a FFB kind of style. I think however, with your style-savvy with regards to your outfits that you can pull this hairstyle off and look fairly current. Its all how the total package is put together - not just the hairstyle!

I'd still like to see you grow out the front/top and keep the sides and back short! I think with your thick and straight hair that it would look awesome! (and, more current!)

Marley - I hear what you're saying and agree about being more current with longer top and front. But I can't stand hair anywhere near my eyes or catching on my glasses. And because my hair is so thick, in order for that top part to behave nicely, I need to flat iron it to look good. Not sure I have the patience for that when I'm just heading to the beach and it's gonna get all wet and do what it wants anyway, you know? But I will think about it before doing anything and appreciate your input

I haven't read the comments above.. yet. I think this would look beautiful. Personally, I find these very short cropped cuts to be the height of elegance and sophistication. There is no way this style would not further increase your style quotient. I would go this short if I had the courage to do so. LOVE

I see this as very current whilst a classic. It does suit you so I see it as a perfect match.

I remember 10 years ago when I moved into our house I was at home with my preschool sons and my neighbour's home was on a Fine Homes Charity Tour. I watched the women walking in and out and decided that when I was 40-50 plus I was NOT going to have a blonde bob, as it was so ubiquitous.

I am 45 and what hairstyle do I have - a blonde bob!! Haha have to laugh at myself.

Although I think it is a less popular style right now - a lot of my friends still have long hair.

I love the Pixie Crop, I have experimented but it does not work on my square face sadly.

Been trying to wrap my head around this short hair=feminine thing ever since I got my last (shortest) cut. I've been feeling MORE feminine, and pondering if a 5ft 7in athletic type, but classic dresser can 'do' gamine? I've been 'feeling' gamine, and pinning up a storm of gamine pics in Pinterest since January, and getting set to bust out my cropped trousers and mariner T's!

Style evolution? Precipitated by a haircut?
