Sundress Rules

I realize sundresses are day dresses and are meant to be worn in, well, the sun... but I'm curious if that rule is pretty firm. Is it a faux-pas to wear a sundress in the evening, like to dinner for instance? For a more specific example, I have this dress in green (for some reason the green version isn't offered on the website):

With a cute clutch and a metallic sandal, is that passable to go to a restaurant in the evening?
I've just been enjoying wearing sundresses so much that it would be nice to maximize my options in where I can wear them. There are only so many brunches and showers to go to (although I have worn a sundress on really hot days just to run errands- why not!). What do you all think?

Unless the restaurant had some sort of formal dress code, I think your outfit idea is great! Dresses are very versatile and appropirate to wear to a multitude of places, especially if you live in a warmer climate.

Absolutely. I live in California and I see a LOT of women wearing dresses sundresses to restaurants in the summer. I love the dress and I'm sure it looks great on you.

But this does raise good questions that perhaps Angie could elaborate on. I would absolutely wear that dress at night, but is there some sort of line we could draw which would divide those dresses that we could wear to dinner (smart casual, say) and those we should limit to daytime wear?

I know that some dresses are "evening" dresses, some are "work" dresses, and some are "day" dresses. Evening dresses are made for dressier occasions, such as weddings or other formal dinners. Work dresses are for business settings where one must be appropriately covered and conservative. But day dresses may be worn to some workplaces and some evening gatherings. What's a rule?

Great! I kind of figured it would be okay as long as the event is not too dressy, but I wanted to be sure there aren't any firm rules about day dresses- that's what you all are here for, right?

The rule is accessories:

o Add a clutch, little jacket, sparkly jewelry and dressy heels = dressed a dress up.

o Add casual flats, a slouchy bag, casual necklace and a cardigan or denim jacket = dressed the same dress down.
