Summer Skirt collection- what to keep and what to edit?

I am looking at my spring and summer clothes- deciding what to keep and what to put in the holding zone and what to edit.

This is my entire skirt collection. My style moniker is Grown Up Charlie’s Angel and my descriptors are relaxed energetic and elegant.

I tried them all on with the same tank and shoes. It might be a bit high contrast in some instances. There are one or two I think would be better with a dark top - 4 and 5 especially.

1. Paula Ryan hanky skirt - my newest skirt purchased 2022.

2. Navy Noanoa skirt - 2019. Freshly washed- it does ease out as the day goes on.

3. Botanical Shani P skirt - 2019.

4. Floral Tuesday Label midi - 2018

5. Black and grey floral A line Shani P skirt - 2008 - my oldest skirt

6. Striped Trelise Cooper Skirt - second hand to me in 2019.

I have some thoughts but will see what the forum thinks.

First, do you have to get rid of any?

I would definitely keep 1, 2 (or another solid vs. print skirt), 3, 4, 5.

No I don’t - there are two here that I am a bit over- it’s hard to know sometimes.

All these - bar the new one- have had decent wear. None are absolute workhorses though but that might be me and skirts - I am more drawn to dresses or pants!

Ah, got it. I find skirts really useful in summer, so that might affect my "keep 'em" mentality. The ones I mentioned seem on trend enough to be worn but if you are over one or two, then you could always put them away for a season to see if they come back into favour. If you have space for that. I did that with a few skirts some years ago and did end up wearing them again after a year.

My favourites for you are #1, #3 and #4. They look great on you! The patterns are summer-ish and can be teamed with tops in various colours from the patterns or with white or cream tops. These skirts look very versatile and can probably be styled for a wide variety of occasions, from casual to more dressy.

(2# and #6 don't look as they suit/fit you so well as the other skirts do. #5 looks a bit austere with your colouring and less summer-ish than the other skirts.)

Ok, the first one is so great I think it sets a new bar for your future skirt purchases! Seriously love that one.

If you’re thinking of letting one go, 5 doesn’t seem very summery to me. 6 is not my favorite either but that may be more a personal preference thing. I think the others look nice.

I would definitely keep #1 and #3. The print in #4 looks a bit dated, but if you've been wearing it the last couple years, I'd keep that also. #6 I find sort of quirky and fun, and the length is flattering, but that might be just my own personal preference. #2 and #5 are the ones I'd be most likely to pass along. The fit the relaxed vibe, but I'm not sure about elegant.

#1, #2 and #6 are my faves. #1 is the KILLER BEST.

#5 is the least Summery, and perhaps pass that one on.

I am clear that I like 1 and 4 (4 has a matching top but I often wear them as seperates). 1 is the best, but I have a fondness for 4.

2 is useful as a navy easy skirt but I have never loved it. But I probably will keep, even if in the holding zone. I thought it would be a real workhorse but that hasn't eventuated.

5 I think I am over - it was useful for school occasions. At 14 years it's been well worn but is still in good condition. I have other things I can wear for those sorts of occasions now - and they are happening less often (where I need to blend, look tidy, but not ostentatious, and be conservative.

3 I do like, mostly with a navy top. I am thinking keep.

6 is the one I am on the fence with. The fit is the most problematic as it's a firm fit at the waist, - I would not tuck. It doesn't go with much as the yellow and red are both cooler toned, so I always wear with black or white. It's a designer skirt. I did wear it a lot in 2019 but not so much since then. I am thinking I might wear it a couple of times in spring and see how I feel.

I love #1. I am not fond of the print in the last one. The second one seems to have less movement than the others. That is a personal thing.
I am trying to imagine what Charlie Angels would wear. I always think of flared jeans.

I did a skirt edit this summer and it was very hard. I purchased two skirts and wanted to let go of two skirts. I like all of my skirts but got rid of the ones that I didn’t love. My favorites are #1 and 6

#1, 4, and 6 are my favourites. Don’t you have a yellow jacket you could wear with #6?

* with hands in pockets of #2, it’s hard to judge the actual fit. It doesn’t have the same ‘flow’ the other skirts have.

I think it is more about the styling than anything about each skirt in itself, so maybe give yourself a skirt challenge to actually wear them all and see what you (and we!) think . I do like #6 and would give it a another chance.

2 6 I am going to wear twice and evaluate - different stylings each time.
5 is going to the thrift shop.

I also have two blouses and three or four dresses I am uncertain about. I will do similar posts!

Late to this but I like your plan!

That button front style of skirt always has a kind of 70s vibe to me, so I think it fits the grownup Charlie’s angel idea. Maybe try styling it with clogs or boots that have a 70s feel (I realize you’re coming into summer so boots may not be the thing…but you get my drift.)

For #6, the combination of pleats, a-line, and knee length is more conservative/classic than I associate with your style, BUT I think the stripes make it kind of sporty. What about playing up that aspect and styling it as if it were a tennis skirt?

I might keep 5 and let 2 go as they are very similar. I am older and wear skirts a lot in summer instead of shorts. Consider putting some in a holding zone for a different time of your life. If you think they will date only keep classic styles.

2 has a 70s vibe so I think you should keep it. Could it be worn in Spring or Autumn with your knee high boots and a lightweight jumper? That’s how I’d wear it.

I really like the shape of #2 and #5 on you, so regardless of your final decision, I'd consider those reference points for future purchases. Obvi you have photos!

My immediate thought was that they all looked great. But thinking on it more, I wasn’t sure I liked 2 and 6 so much. 2 is kind of boring to me ( sorry) and doesn’t really seem like your style? And 6 is rather too obvious with its bright colours and its shape, steals the attention from you.
I like 5 but being a 2008 skirt I can understand you may be a bit over it after so long- that can happen to me too. And you have worn it plenty and don’t need something like that as much. So donating it makes sense.

I would skip on nr 3&4-I cannot explain why exactly- it may be the creamy yellowy colors rather than the print itself-and love the blues on you!!

Sorry to disappear- I had a couple of days away.

It’s interesting the different opinions- I think 1 is universally liked - and all the rest have mixed views. Which is actually good because it shows that nothing is right or wrong.

The next couple of weeks are a good time to play around with skirts as the weather is becoming better. Might be a chance to put the denim to the side and experiment more!!

I just peeked in, and I’m glad 1, 3, and 4 are staying! Those are my favorites, and they suit the sense of movement and positive energy you convey in your photos.

I dislike #4, regardless of occasion or season, because I think gray color is drab and smooshes down your energy.

#2 is eh for me. There’s no movement or energy to this skirt, but the color is pretty on you. I’d only say keep it, if wearing it isn’t pulling you away from wearing something you’re more excited about.

#6 has color and should have a sense of movement, but somehow feels off. Like the pleating is too strict and holding back the energy.

Mary Beth - your comments are astute. The grey is going. The navy and stripe are ready to wear- but I have also realised that a particular top I used to wear with them has been passed on. So at the moment I am pausing til it’s a bit warmer. But I think it likely they might both go…. I have a couple of dresses up for consideration too- I want to look at the wardrobe together. I did a large edit in 2018 and this might be the next one.

So fun to see different peoples' styles and opinions. 2 is the only one I don't love, at least for me. Not sure I'm crazy about it for you either--it's hard to tell with the white top and bare legs. Have you posted your challenge outfits with the 2 you're on the fence about?
