I woke up to cooler temps this morning and a hint of fall in the air (although it's going back up to 90 later this week, blech). With all the closet editing talk lately, the promise of fall made me want to take stock of what has worked for me this summer and what hasn't. I thought I'd tackle the little project of assessing my sandals, since those are my staple summer footwear (I'll look at my sneakers separately).

I have 23 pairs of sandals (not including my Tevas and my pool flip-flops), and it was quickly apparent that there are six pairs I have not worn at all this summer.

Pic 1: shows my higher heel and wedge sandals -- front row are workhorses and back row are secondary, although I couldn't help but notice that I have not worn those gold Mat Bernson sandals in the back left much this year -- maybe 1-2 times? The Paul Green Cayannes (front right) really took over their spot in many cases.

Pic 2: flat sandals (oh, and one pair of higher heels crept in there, the olive Antelopes on the top left -- not frequently worn but I enjoy them when I do wear them). Again, workhorses in front (some are ultracasual slip-ons but that's what I need a lot in summer).

Pic 3: The orphans. Lucky platform wedges in soft rose gold fabric (pics 4-5), Sperry lace-up wedge espadrilles (pics 6-7), Stuart Weitzman white gladiators (pics 8-9), Lucky (small wedge) rose gold ankle straps (pics 10-11), Splendid (small wedge) blue wrap ankle straps (pics 12-13), and Vince black and white flat ankle straps (pics 14-15).

I am trying to identify the reasons these shoes have gone unworn.

4-5 I'm not feeling the platform wedge style so much lately -- I feel a little unstable without any ankle support. But I like how they look on my feet and legs. They just don't feel current to me.

6-7 ok, they're comfortable, flattering and I like them, I guess I have just been a little too lazy to style them. The wrap ties are work for my lazy summer self, and they loosen up around my foot as the day wears on. But they have a certain something that I may want to keep in my wardrobe as an option.

8-9 I feel guilty about these. They were not cheap. The elastic straps are just a teeny bit tight on my ankles -- I don't think they look it, though. My weight is up this year, which makes me self-conscious of my legs looking thick, and the high straps and horizontal line, combined with a flat sole, make me worry about flattery. But I like them and maybe just need to get over it.

10-11 They are a little snug around the ankle, and always seem either too dressy to dress down or too casual to dress up. I kept an eye out for new rose gold sandals this year but no luck.

12-13 I like these but just haven't reached for them. No issues with comfort, just maybe a little difficulty in working with the blue? It's either too matchy or not matchy enough with my outfits? I think again I have just been too lazy to try to style them.

14-15 They are very flat and very thin, hard soles, and I don't love the way the black ankle strap cuts across my ankle with short summer hems (again, contributing to the "thick legs" syndrome).

I'm thinking of getting rid of 4-5 (Lucky platform wedge), 10-11 (Lucky ankle wrap), and 14-15 (Vince b&w).

What do you think?

And if you stuck with me through all of that, here's a beautiful sunset from last night as a reward.
