Summer Footwear - Are You Going to Try Espadrilles?

The past week I've been collecting potential Summer footwear. I thought I would share my efforts. Does anyone have any experience with these? Any interest in espadrilles in general? The only ones I've tried are the Manebis from Shopbop which were well made and cute but did not work on my feet.

I was really into espadrilles the last time they were trendy - in the early 00s, maybe? I found that the jute sides were really hard to keep clean. Usually my summer sandals can make it 2-3 years but most of the espadrilles looked dingy long before the first summer was over.

Laura my sandals are making it 2 seasons tops now. I have always been really hard on footwear, but some of the construction is really poor too (even when paying a reasonable amount for a leather sandal).

I wrote this in my other Collection thread, but I sprained my ankle in the late 70s wearing a wedge espadrille while catching / hopping on a Chicago bus. The lack of support scares me but maybe shoes have improved since? I am proceeding with caution.

I am totally smitten with the lace up espadrilles the blogger is wearing in Inge's latest post.

I tried the Via Spigas that are on sale. They fit my high arched foot well, but were uncomfortable when walking. The soles have no flexibility at all and my heel kept lifting out of the back and rubbing against all the ties wrapped around my ankles. It is a better looking shoe in concept then in practice.

I have these Franko Sarto have been wearing them for a month now and they are very comfy.

I read some very bad reviews about the lace up espadrilles, so if you are considering them I would look into them very carefully.

I like the look of them but every pair I've ever tried on was very stiff and uncomfortable. I do like the slip-on espadrille inspired shoes, though.

My Toni Pons are a staple in my summer wardrobe. The placement of the straps keeps my foot securely in place and the lower heel makes them 8-hour walking shoes for me. Mine have held up remarkably well for two seasons now with just a bit of a clean up every few months using a damp cloth dipped in a smidge of laundry detergent.

The higher wedge ones, held on with ankle ties, are really cute, but far too dangerous for my tastes.

I have these Sperry lace-up espadrilles that I think were from 2013 -- I admired them when they came out, but never bought them until they went on sale and showed up at the Rack. They replaced an old pair of espadrilles I had that were a similar style but in black -- those were really cute but rubbed the tops of my feet so bad I got blisters. The Sperrys are really comfortable.

I have lusted after those koi espadrilles but have resisted so far...

I have a pair of Lifestride espadrille sing back open toe wedges from two summers ago, and they are still going strong, and are quite comfortable.

I do have some rope soled booties (dreaded Tom's), and that's where I'll be stopping. Espadrilles are in the same category as foam flip flops for me...

I've always had a thing for espadrilles. I had some sandals that I loved but the sole was rough on my feet (literally). I recently found the rather extravagant sandals below second hand for something like $10, but they are more occasion shoes for me. I also have an old school pair somewhere, I should dig them out.

I'm too hard on shoes to wear a combination of cloth and jute. Last summer, though, I chose a pair of faux-espadrilles from Crocs (see below). These have a cushy foot bed and are far cuter on the foot than in the pic.

I find they tend to be too heavy. I cannot stand heavy shoes, no matter how comfortable the arch and fit is otherwise. My legs tire too easily if I have to clunk around in them.

That said if you look hard enough you can find espadrille-like shoes that are lighter weight. I have a pair now, purchased I think it was 2 seasons ago at Macy's. They aren't true Espadrilles if you look close (I think the wedge is actually plastic), but the color is similar and it has texture so nobody can tell the difference. They are light weight so do not tire out my feet.

I have a pair from a few seasons ago that I put away. They have the rope base and subtle leopard fabric top. I might give them a whirl. They are pretty comfy.

Beth Ann, I love the croc wedges. I have 2 similar pairs, one in black and another in orange with a camel base. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned.

I love them and usually have one pair or another in my collection . I haven't bought any this summer though....have a few that are holdovers from past years that are just fine. The one thing that bugs me about them though is the canvas can be stiff and cutting on the top of my foot on the higher-heeled wedge styles. Of course the canvas needs to be stiffened to provide some sort of structure and support but I always seem to end up with the top of my foot rubbed raw. Really attractive

Not for me thanks. I recall an unfortunate incident in my youth when a pair got waterlogged in an unexpected rain shower and I spent a miserable afternoon walking around with a pair of very heavy sponges attached to my feet. So, no.

A good part of our summer is usually dry. I got a pair of espadrilles that have already had some wear. I need summer footwear that can keep my feet cool, but covered. Mine are metallic gold Sperry Topsiders.

It's funny, espadrilles are so definitely not part of my style.They just don't work in my look. I have nothing against them. In fact, I have very stylish associations with them - they remind me of the summer I spent in France as a teen, around people who were much more stylish (and wealthier!) than anyone I knew back home.

I might try espadrilles heels.
Jennifer Aniston has a pair I like. She wears them with shorts and it lifts the look a bit. The platform makes me nervous though....

I love the idea of espadrilles but never feel comfortable in them. I wonder if it's because my hair is dark.

I usually have a pair in my closet but I don't have any this summer. I like the look of the ones that tie around your ankle/leg, but they aren't very practical. To get the laces to stay on my leg, they have to be tied really tight, almost uncomfortably tight, or they slip down. It was just too much fussing. I haven't found a replacement pair yet but I like many of the shoes shown on this thread.
