Summer evening wedding in Seattle

Hi ladies, I would love advice on what to wear to an evening August wedding in Seattle. It will be in a club by the water. Dress is "cocktail." My main question is what colors are appropriate. I am the aunt of the bride, late 40s, pear shaped.

What are the colours YOU enjoy wearing?? Therein, I think will lie your answer. For what it's worth, unless you have very delicate colouring I'd avoid pastels, but apart from that, and not choosing the same colour as the bride (presumably white/ivory) or her Mum, the choice is yours. Remember too, that the old rule about never wearing black to a wedding has completely been overturned (or at least it has here in Paris.) A simple black or navy sheath, accessorized with a small gold clutch, and perhaps a gold gossamer wrap to keep the evening chill off your shoulders, could be stunning. But then so could any jewel colour that flatters you. Imagine jade green slub silk, or the same fabric in a rich garnet. Spectacular! The bottom line is this: If you are wearing something that you feel brings out the best in you, then you'll feel relaxed and happy, and so will everyone around you!

Ooh, I'm with La Francaise: modulo a few restrictions on the colors you shouldn't wear, you should wear the colors that make you feel fabulous

Also: is that Shilshole? My husband grew up in that area, and the pier looks a bit familiar. In any case, a summer wedding on the water in Seattle will be AMAZING.

LaF, that is good to hear... I wore a little black dress to my son's wedding. DIL's sister actually had a black colour scheme for her wedding.

CS, I'm sorry I can't help you much. I'm hopeless when it comes to protocol, so I would just go with whatever flattered me. All I know is that it's considered tacky to wear white to someone else's wedding, so I would avoid wearing a white or near-white dress.

Oh, La Francaise gave you wonderful advice and I could envision each of her delicious descriptions. Seeing that stunning view, I can see you picking any color from the sunset. You can't go wrong with a sheath and jewel tones are gorgeous. Have a wonderful time.

Yes Charmain, that is Shilshole. As long as the cloudcover is gone, we should have a lovely sunset view like that.

LF, thank you for the lovely advice. I love getting advice from all over the world on this forum. My first thought was that Paris is so much more chic than Seatle and the same concept may not fly here. Then I realized fabulosity works anywhere! Great approach to go with what makes you feel fab.

JR and Vicki, thanks also for your excellent ideas-it never occured to me to pick colors from the sunset but it makes so much sense. i will stay away from white...
