Summer crops?

I ordered the Caslon cropped pants below, but either the fit or I have changed since last year. They fit OK, but not spectacularly, and I'm not sure if I should return or not.

We have suddenly rocketed into too-hot-for-jeans weather - yesterday was nearly 100 degrees - and I am scrambling for something that will work on the smart casual end of things, with nice sandals or flats. I've got a few shorts for the weekends, but I want something a bit dressier, cropped
pants or capris, and not in denim, because that's too hot/heavy. Any thoughts? I've looked at Loft and Gap and not been blown away by anything.

These may be more casual than you wanted but I bought them in two colours. I love that they are convertible - 2 looks in one. I love the pale pink. They are flattering on curves with the seaming and very light.

They had bunches of cute crops/ankle pants in Loft yesterday. I was trying to keep my blinders on, but I think they were on sale.

Keep looking. There are so many out there to try. It would be a shame to settle for something that you aren't excited to wear. Maybe crops are not your style.

Every year I vow "No more crops!"
And then it hits triple digits and I can't get into them fast enough.
Those you linked to don't look all that cool (temperature wise) - maybe a lighter color? A little shorter? Linen?

Carter, I will keep an eye out at Loft. Unfortunately, I'm a size 16 right now, so I've got to order online, unless I get lucky with someone else's return in the clearance section of the store.

Crops aren't really my style, Joy, it's true, but I just haven't found many casual skirt options that work for me, and long pants are just too hot. I used to wear walking shorts, but that length looks very out of style to me right now.

MG, good thought. Maybe J Jill? Linen pants are usually elastic waist, which does me no favors...

When it gets hot the main thing I want is no spandex. Look only for 100% cotton or linen or linen and cotton. was lucky last year to find some at Bass outlet, and Macys.

Have you tried JAG crops? I have two pair from several years back and they are still going strong.

I feel your pain as I don't really like crops either. When it is screaming hot there are very limited options. Good luck.

I checked WHBM website (not sure about in store) and they sell the pants in a 16. I found them true to size or even generous. I noticed too that they have a BOGO sale. If not the convertible ones I posted, maybe something else?

Have you considered Eileen Fisher silk pants? They are a bit pricey, but they are dressier than a lot of the crops out there and very light and cool. There are some on sale at Neiman Marcus right now.

I've made it through a summer in compromises bought in desperation. Every time you wear the item, you feel regret.

I bought these AG Tristan trousers in 2014, not sure if the cut is still the same. But they were a nice, flat front nice quality cotton pant. A bit more straight legged than your Caslon chino.

Update: I returned the Caslon cropped pants to Nordstrom, and while I was there tried on the below Sejour ones in the Encore dept. The smallest they had in store was 16w, which was too loose on me, but they ordered me some 14w's to try. Now that I've had time to sleep on it, I kinda regret the order. They are practical but I fear they're going to look very out of style. The thing I liked about the longer Caslon ones was that they still looked current, with the rolled hem and longer length. I'm afraid I'll just look "soccer mom who hasn't been shopping in five years" in these, and I'm just not quite ready to be that person yet.

(Relevant to our dowdiness conversations of recent days I guess - when does practicality win, and when does fashion win?)

Laura, I like the new Caslon; it will be interesting to see how they fit on you, once they come in. These don't look out of date to me. They're a very simple cut. ...and if they still look dated to you, once you see them, just use your top and sandals to get the most mileage out of the look. Hugs and hopefulness in your search!

Quick update: the Sejour crops in 14w have arrived. They fit well through the waist and hip. Normally that would make them an auto-keep, but I'm ambivalent about the style. Maybe I'll try styling them a few ways this weekend and sleep on it.

Laura, I'm still a fan of these crops, and I don't find they look dated. To me they look "classic." Have you tried the Outfit Generator on Finds? Of course you can't lock in the pants, but playing around with either "Your Collection Only" or "Your Wardrobe Only" will be fun, and you can put the pants in, mentally. Or, go out of the box and use "Everyone's Finds" to brainstorm even more broadly.
