Suggest:Quality Handbag for a 22 year old

Hello Fabbers,

I am on a lookout for a handbag/purse for my 22 year old sister for her birthday.
She recently started an internship and now have to dress up more formally.
I am extremely practical when comes to purses so I do not know what would an intelligent and spunky 22 year would like. She has shown interest in Kate Spade's Lanie (pic attached)
But no, i am not giving her that - Not happening.

Hence I am here to use your collective wisdom to find some modern, young and qualitative brands/styles.

Mauvish, I don't mean to be flip, and I don't mean to suggest something that could be out of your budget, but why not get her that bag? It's on sale already and is another 30% off, so it comes to about $125. That's a fairly typical price for a high-quality leather handbag. It seems to be a classic neutral style and shouldn't date very easily, and you already know that she likes it. My worry with clothes/purse type gifts is that they can easily go unworn if the wearer doesn't really like it...but that wouldn't be the case for this purse.

What is your budget for this gift? Perhaps there are very similar bags at the price point you are looking for?

Crazy one makes an excellent point. I was going to suggest a fossil tote, but it would be a similar price or higher.

If it is beyond your budget, then how about a gift card towards this bag? Or perhaps find another friend/ family member who would like to chip in on it with you.

The thing with bags is they are so very personal. What works for one will not work for another.

Before I came to YLF I was not a "bag lady." I really had no interest in them and could not see why anyone would spend so much money on them. I still don't like the "it" bag phenomenon. But I do like a bag that works hard for me and I do appreciate it. When you think of it, it's something you carry most days, so in the long run the cost per wear is very small.

crazyone: I did not do math like you did. i read price tag of 178 as close to 200 dollars. what you say makes total sense. and its closer to my budget. i might get it.

Lisa: my current budget is 100 or less. May be i should have mentioned i am buying gifts for my family for my annual summer trip to toronto and buying gifts for almost 17 family members ... and i would really like to stay within my budget.
my poor sister with a july birthday...lol

lisa, please do suggest some styles or guidelines, as i suffer from handbag blindness. i just see their practicality and not personality.

Mauvish, that makes sense, with 17 family members that's a lot of presents to buy! And I understand the desire to get gifts for everyone, my parents always did that when we went back to India. That said, if your budget is $100 or less $124 isn't thaat far off of it, especially if you consider that you know she already likes it. It always pays to see if there's an additional discount.

This is kind of a similar price range, slightly cheaper (with a 25% coupon RMCHEER25 it comes to $111), from Rebecca Minkoff. In general I think they make bags that are suitable for young professional women.

I just recently bought a bag there for about $80 but it's a much smaller bag than the one your sister was interested in so it may not suit her needs.

I think giving your sister a gift certificate at the amount you want to spend is better than giving her a different bag. A handbag is so personal that it would be unlikely you could pick out the perfect bag for her. Further, I remember decades later being given something almost the same as the thing I wanted. I didn't like the substitute at all.
