Styling the Broderie top

It's a question of drape, I now think. That's due to the heavier fabric weight. Is it flattering? Or not really--I look more apple-y than ever? (It's supposed to be pretty, not some edgy look here!) and do I even belong in pretty, sweet looks like this?

Bonus pick of my Anthro skirt I just got off eBay. I already wore it today for a tango lesson and it was perfect.

And would you say the embellishment at the neckline does anything to de-emphasize the bust, similarly to a v-neck, or it's too subtle?

I think the top neither emphasizes nor de-emphasizes the bust. I do think it's a very pretty top. I know you were having a few issues with your bra showing--were you thinking of always wearing it with a jacket? I know what you mean about "pretty, sweet looks" -- I have the same misgivings. It's not something I'm always comfortable with but by wearing this top with a jean jacket I think you balance the sweetness. That I think is one of the advantages of a denim jacket.

Hi, Jill. I was convinced from Angie's comment that the bra thing wasn't a huge issue for me (though I need to stay away from my black bras, for sure!).

I'm liking it, but I'm still not entirely convinced.

May I be honest in saying I'm not loving this for you? I think it's not long enough in the body - you know, sitting in that no-man's land zone. Styling-wise, I like it with your jeans in the first pic - the jeans balance the sweetness of the top. With the skirt, you're losing your inherent edge. I missed in initial post about this top. Is it filling a special hole in your closet? If not, I'd like to think there are better tops out there for you. And can I also say this? I think you could really wear clearer, brighter colours really well - and if this top was a stronger clearer blue, it would really work nicely against your paler jeans and jacket.

Please, I want people to be honest! And not feel they have to qualify it in any way. Thanks, lisap. I do like the top but not feeling the wow factor I've gotten from other tops and tanks I've bought recently. This is a pretty piece but perhaps it's not for me. I hear you on the length, too. You've probably articulated a bit more why I'm having this problematic reaction.

It's not filling a precise hole, per se. I do need summer tops. (And no more sleeveless tanks, please. And ideally no more silk, just cotton.) I have been stating I'd like to have a few items that are more feminine, because I tend to have an androgynous look and I'm going for a bit more balance. This one is very pretty with nice detail, but not quite winning me over.

I think having some more feminine tops is a great idea but if you're on the fence about it maybe this just isn't the one. I always try to imagine that I'm about to go out with friends (or wherever you might be planning to wear this sort of top). Then I ask myself, "Is this the top I would want to wear if I was going out tonight?" That usually decides it for me.

I like the top on you; I think it is fine with your bustline, not emphasizing that area. I think it might go better with flared jeans. It's basically a boxy style, so I would like to see it with pants or a skirt that is fitted at the waist and high hip, and then flares out. I think it's not quite the right silhouette with the skirt you've shown--with the fullness in the skirt, I'd like to see a shorter or more fitted top, or one with a banded waist like in the stock photo. Maybe try semi-tucking the top with the skirt and with these slim-legged jeans? That might work. As to jackets, I like it best with the light blue jean jacket--both for the jacket's shorter length and low contrast.

I think you seem too conflicted about this top. I know this feeling well, and when I feel too unsure, I usually return.

I totally agree with Jill. If I don't think I'll pick it for going out/seeing friends, etc., it usually means it's not better than what I already have.

I think you're right, delurked and others. There's nothing wrong with a casual top, but this one's price point demands stronger feelings of yes. Tomorrow I'll try and post a recent top purchase that I really feel fab about. This one didn't make it for some reason. Thanks, everyone. Carry on.

Love your hair, but I think you can find other tops that will work out better for you. I agree with Lisa and Firecracker. The top is ok, but you want something that you will love to wear.

I can't make up my mind. I "like" this top, but it isn't styled in a summery way here for me to say whether it's a good or bad summer purchase. I think you need to click pictures without the jacket. What are the sleeves like?

I like it more with jeans. But I think I'd like it more if it draped more and was a tad longer.

Looking forward to seeing pics of other new purchases you feel Fab in, so that I can compare this particular top with others you already love.

Personally, I think this top is very slimming (not that it's a style goal, Nancy!). It fits really well and is the right length too. I love the way you've styled it here.

But YOU have to feel fab in it too.

Thank you, Angie. Your vote of confidence means a lot. I'll think about it, as well as see how it works with my shoes and other wardrobe. I really need summer wear that's not silk, or sleeveless, and extra points if it's not a tee.

I also think I like it on you Mochi - just not sure about the bra issue, would you wear a skin tone bra then instead? And will you ever wear it without a jacketk? (wondering if you like the sleeves)
