styling help needed

cinnamon fern

I haven't posted a WIW in ages, although I've been reading ... but I wanted to pop in and ask for some styling help.

I'm very fond of this sweater. It's warm and cuddly for the endless winter we're having, plus a new-to-me color. But I'm not quite sure what to wear it with. It's a lot of volume for me.

Shown here with a black pencil skirt and black layering tee, because this is sort of my default underlayer these days.

Any thoughts?

Nice sweater!

I think with the volume of the sweater you might like the look of pairing it with something slimmer on the bottom like jeans or leggings.
I think it would look great with some slim jeans tucked into boots.

And if you want to get adventurous, you could try it with black leggings and a stretchy mini skirt.

I'd also be curious to know what it looks like as you are wearing it in the photo but with a thin belt added. And maybe a scarf?

Just some ideas...

I agree that a very slim bottom might work best. I'd also go for a long-sleeved underlayer. It's a very chic top!

It looks great the way you are showing it! Have you tried it with a
button-front shirt? Not sure if the necklines would fight, but I was
thinking that a rounded shirt-tail might complement the high-low
silhouette nicely.

I love this outfit on you. I wear similar silhouettes often, and similar color combination. I'd add a chunky necklace or scarf with black and copper/cognac/rust. Sometimes I wear turquoise too. Or chunky bracelets. I do this top/topper combo with black skinnes and ankle boots (moto or slimmer profile) in black or cognac, slim jeans and brown suede knee boots. My current favorite is much as you have styled it here, with midi or knee length tube skirt and long slim black or charcoal tunic top. This topper color looks great with your hair and skin and the whole is effortless, flattering and chic.

ETA: scarf with black/eye color/topper tones or color -- to balance the dark and visual weight on bottom, since you are fair haired. Long sleeves need to be scrunched anyway to length you have, for structure,,so add chunky bracelets with black somewhere to balance dark on bottom. Your skirt here is slim enough to my eye. For more avant garde styling wear harem pants with booties, sliver of ankle showing.

I'd go long to shake things up. Some kind of midi skirt. I'd also, because I'm me, be wearing a long-sleeved turtleneck

It's lovely and looks so cozy.

I'd like to see it with longer sleeves underneath (tight fitting sleeves not loose), black, navy/ink blue or white would work. Navy/ink blue with this shade would look very rich, I think.

This color would go extremely well with the new blush shade -- perhaps a bag in that color?

And with white denim jeans... would be to die for...

Also, some gold accents somewhere. Chunky gold watch. Gold hardware on a bag.

Bone booties would be lovely. If that's impractical for where you live, chestnut brown instead. Tall or booties. Bonus points if they have gold hardware.

You could also do red accessories. A blue-red, like cranberry. That beige seems to have blue undertones to my eye.

I'd have to see the top with jeans, but I suspect you could probably add an interesting belt?

You've already got some great suggestions! I especially like the idea of wearing it with shades of cream, ivory, white, etc. Also, in addition to wearing it with a skinny silhouette on the bottom, I would try just the opposite, and wear it with some slouchy, roomy pants - BF jeans, track pants (kind of like those Leiths that you sent me!), or a wider leg pant - or a pant that is roomy and baggy through the hips thighs and then tapers at the ankle. This sweater is sort of a cropped type (very "in" right now!) so I'd try it with all kinds of baggy pants - to get a version of that new silhouette! (You know, "volume on volume.")

Oooh, thanks! I'm taking notes. White jeans (if I ever find a pair of full-length white jeans). Pale footwear (doable as soon as the slush disappears). Harem pants! I have a pair on order as we speak.

Interesting all the long sleeves and turtleneck suggestions ... two things I like the look of but almost always find uncomfortable.

Nice top! I do like it layered with the black tee.

For the bottom, I would suggest dark skinnies (they're not out of style yet!). I think that something long and streamlined might look good. If you like skirts, maybe you could find a long maxi that is fitted and has a slit so that you can walk.

I like it a lot as is, CF, haven't read the others' suggestions, so apologies if these have already come up:
I think the jumper will also look great with a white or striped LS tee underneath, or a white or light blue button-down (can you tell I'm really into pastels right now;-), paired with white or faded blue BF jeans (slim fit or looser, I love the idea of volume on volume), or dressy track pants.

Turtlenecks.. you either love 'em or you hate 'em!

I was thinking that if you are going to pair this sweater with darker colors underneath, the arms look funny to my eye bare. This may be my own weird fashion allergy. Either it's cold enough you need long sleeves... or it's not, in which case, skip the under layer entirely (or just wear a cami), and then pair it with lighter colored bottoms & shoes.

Of course there's a place for elbow-length and 3/4 sleeves, but I guess with that sweater sleeve length, it just competes or something. Make sense?

Interesting ... I almost always push long sleeves up to above the elbow, like here - the only exception is with coats (which stay all the way down) and blazers (which only get pushed up to the forearm). I do tend to run hot though.

I call it "cinnamon."

And I love both your outfits, plus all the suggestions you have received. What a versatile, useful piece. It's a bit like a poncho but more reined in.
