Styling a runway Collection from your closet

This video popped up in my YouTube feed, and I found it fun and inspiring. She pulls together a rail of clothing, shoes, accessories and bags, and creates her own runway show in her living room.

I’m curious to try this myself, to see what I would pull together, with no preconceived notions, using what I already have.

I know my collection would have botanical prints, ocean colors, and pale metallic jewelry and accessories.

Fun video! As a fan of capsule dressing, I do something similar with my travel capsules. Selecting a palette and/or theme is important - then it’s the accessories (gloves, hats, bags, belts, footwear) that often make the look.

A ‘pay it forward’ week provides a similar result. Pick one item from outfit 1 to wear in outfit 2, then a different item from outfit 2 to wear on day 3, etc. Having some repetition provides the sense of cohesion that is the hallmark of a runway collection.

I don’t think anything I would put together from my closet would come out as particularly ground breaking, but I could manage one or two themes or a colour story. They would probably look like something from a Lands’ End or Ann Taylor look-book.

Sounds interesting - I will watch later. My runway would feature vintage designer looks all the way, mixing eras and lesser and greater known designers.

OK I found the video with her process fascinating, and I love the idea of styling a runway collection from your closet. But! the quick-edit reel at the end was sooooo disappointing! I want to savor the outfits she put together, I could barely even register them!!! I hate tiktok and I am so old and I don't even care who knows it.

What a lot of work she put in! Wow. But the idea of putting together the "show" could be translated, as Carla said, for a travel (or other) capsule. Thinking of it as a fashion show allows you to go all out with the drama and probably encourages use of more statement items. Fun!

Fun video. It was interesting to see her process but like others already said I would have preferred if the end result was slower speed because it was hard to appreciate the final looks.

My own collection would definitely have blues, graphic tees, jeans, and colorful sneakers.

The wearer has dramatic pieces to begin with, which helped create outfits that are theatrically juxtaposed = runway excitement. Creative and well done!

Fun. I agree with Angie that the poster had the ingredients for a dramatic capsule. I think I could put together something similarly “showy” for winter using burgundy, velvet and metallics. But I would struggle with summer, where my clothing leans a lot more casual. It kind of confirms my view that the runway is about creating an exaggerated, dramatic, inspirational look. Generally speaking those looks get pared back by retail for real life wear. But interesting to think about all the same!

I think mine would be outfits with black tops! Since I decided that I nearly always prefer my outfits with black tops, that has both simplified my life and opened up new possibilities.
