New Pics - Style These Shoes

Hi All,

I have had these Wittner shoes for some years and find I can't part with them. I realize that Oxfords are very on trend at the moment but I am wondering how you feel about these (and remember it is winter here). I would like to reintroduce them into my wardrobe but need some ideas.

Could they be worn with Skinnies, leggings, even skirts???

I love that they look like a man's shoe and I love square toed shoes.

Your thoughts and suggestions most welcome. And if you think I have lost the plot and they need to go, please feel free to say so.

I love oxford with dresses! I would go for an above the knee classic dress and black opaque tights. Perfect for the office!

These look like perfect pant and dress shoes. I'd keep the tops girly to balance the manly shoe (although the heel makes them less so) Patterned tights would look good as well. I think I'd need to see the whole outfit with skinnies/leggings. I couldn't get away with it because my ankles are small and my feet are so big I'd feel clunky, but if you're more balanced with that it could work (also if the skinnies have some stacking - even though I'm probably off here since we're now onto ankle length..)

I think styled just right and on your tiny size-6 feet, these could really work and look fab.

On my size-10 feet, these would make me look like a stern, celibate Victorian governess clumping down the hall with the children's gruel and cod liver oil!

I think it's the square toes and chunky heel that make them questionable. Seeing them styled with an outfit will be the identifier.

My first thought when seeing these is that they are kind of dated... Oxfords are in but the heel and toe box is different this time around. I think you would run into trouble if you tried to wear these with a dress. You could wear them with boot or wide leg trousers that go down to the floor in the back and only expose the toe in the front. I think this would look ok, but as a petite, you risk making yourself look shorter than you are with such a boxy front shoe. I always find a slight point, even if it is an almond shaped toe, to be more flattering and elongating.

I agree w/ modgrl that these look different than today's oxfords - BUT I'm thinking they might be a nice 90s influence this Fall, if you are into that.

I just got rid of a very similar pair of shoes in cognac but without laces. I just could not make them work for myself and felt frumpy every time I wore them..:-(

how about bringing in some of the current trends...

on your "i love black" thread, how about swapping the oxfords for the boots in the 2nd outfit with the black and white dress?

on your "backwards dress" thread, the all black dress, how about swapping the oxfords for the flats and tossing on a chambray shirt or denim jacket or tie a plaid scarf as a sly reference to 90s grunge?

on your midi madness thread, swap the boots out for the oxfords.

if you have a lace top, add skinnies and the oxfords to dial down the girlyness and the formality.

i wouldn't wear them with wide legs. on shorties like us, a pointed toe is better at extending the leg line in those type of pants.

Hm without reading what anyone else wrote, I feel these look dated. I think that a more modern oxford would work better, especially if you were planning to add oxfords to outfits as a sassy/edgy element.

Thanks everyone for your advice here. I have styled the shoes this morning for you to see. New pic above in original post. Worn with a black Ponte A line shift dress and spotty blouse. I have a love/hate relationship with this blouse and only wear it under things. And please excuse me "cropping " my head of...I'm tired, need a hair cut and don't feel at my best today:)

PS.. forgot to say I usually wear this dress with a black and white stripe long sleeve top, and the dress with boots, which overal I think is a better look I hope.

First, the disclaimer: I don't intend this to be mean in any way, and I understand it may be specific to my age, but here goes:

The shoes with the black dress and print blouse look like something the nuns might have worn at my high school 40 years ago. If that's not the look you're going for, I would recommend putting the shoes with something a little edgier, like the shorter skirt someone recommended, or the patterned tights, or high-waisted pants, or maybe mixing in a brighter color. Just to look funky, rather than nun-ish. Not that there's anything wrong with nuns, if you are one... (Okay, I'm struggling here.)

Sorry I'm with Tessara here, I like the dress with the print blouse, but the length and shape with the shoes definitely give off the nun vibe. Shorter dress (above/at knee)?Funkier hosiery?

Thanks Tessera, you are certainly not mean:) I appreciate your honesty.. that is why I asked:) And no 'nun' wasn't quite what I was going for... lol.

JjSloan hmm the nun thing again:) For me it's the blouse in particular that is not doing me any favours... maybe I just really want the shoes to work but need to let them go

I agree with some of the other comments, that perhaps something different would work better with the oxfords, maybe a pencil skirt and tights?

Deborah, I'm leaning towards thinking that they just aren't the right shoes to wear with dresses or skirts because of the style. I think that because they are so chunky and have the heavy, squared off toes, they would probably work much better under wider-leg pants than with skirts or skinnies.

I could see this look working with a more delicate/streamlined oxford, hose that wasn't so heavy (perhaps a pattern?) and a dress that's a little more fitted/cut closer to your body. Or perhaps pairing a skirt that's no longer than knee length with a patterned blouse.

Una, thanks for the link. Just had a look and I see that my shoes would be referred to as booties and apart from the square toe they are very similar to those in the current fossil range. I may have some more styling to do but I think Im keeping them.:)

That sounds good! I admit I've fallen in love with the blouse - it's the dots on the sleeves - they create an optical illusion of downward flare. I don't have any nun associations to contend with though

I don't intend to be mean but I think they are to heavy for that dress. The heel low and square, square toe, too "sensible" for my taste. But i consider them with wide-legs and flow y blouse?
