Stupid Auto Correct!

Often when I check back on a post to read further comments after mine, I am horrified to see that the gremlins in my devices have not produced the word I was typing!! Ever happen to you??

I was just follow up on Anna's floral birks post and to my horror, I had typed
"the girls look great".... girls should have been "birks". Here in Aus 'the girls' can be and is used to reference ones breasts!!

So should any of you read something equally as silly as this in any of my comments (and I am aware there have been a few), I apologise in advance and trust I never offend anyone:)

Wanna make me feel better and share some funny auto corrects in your comments???

Hmm, I don't have an autocorrect. I do notice a spelling thingamabob that will put a dashed red underline beneath words that aren't in its dictionary (like "Birks"), so that I can examine the word and see if I want to change it. But I get the final say, not the computer.

In the U.S. too, "girls" can have the same meaning you mentioned. Ha ha.

I totally get this.

So often that in fact I was thinking of starting a thread like this myself.

I would do the same as Gigi and caro, BUT my hands have hard time catching up with my brain and by the time I correct some things I may loose an original thought... or, since the brain sees what the brain wants to see, I sometimes don't even notice the typos until I return to my own text some time later - and then "shock, horror!"

Actually I think it's the preemptive text thingy rather than auto correct. It assumes the word you are going to type and sometimes I miss it. I try really hard to check before I post but....

I don't have auto correct on my computer, but I do have those word suggestions on my phone. I have both English and German activated, because typing English without it is really bothersome. But sometimes I hit the wrong word, especially if they are so similar. My phone usually thinks I want to write German, so there are German words in between english ones if I don't pay attention. I could deactivate the German but that takes too much time to do it every time I want to write something in English.

I usually catch it but sometimes not. Most of the time it's funny, so I just leave it -- especially if I am texting DH.

I have gone back to my posts to see words that make no sense at all (some weird spell check gone wrong!). Thankfully we do not have *those* grammar guru posters and spell check posters like in other forums who would make fun of you endlessly when you make a mistake O_O

I have the same problem - and also what Astrid mentioned because I have English and Spanish on my devices, switching between the two often. My iPad seems to be the biggest offender. I think it is the pre-emptive thing, bc sometimes I notice as I'm typing it puts something there that's WAY wrong - but if I keep typing it fixes itself to be what I typed (usually).

So anyway yeah I usually overlook typos and strange stuff here since I know it happens to all of us.

The bane of my existence! Seriously - -it happens all the time to me as well, working on my laptop or my desktop. It's the preemptive thing, I suspect.

That autocorrect drives me crazy. Sometimes I feel like I'm arguing with it on my iPad or iPhone!

One of my daughter's many nicknames is gal. When texting my husband it often autocorrects to Hal. I just leave it now. We have friends whose daughter's name is Ruby - they often call her Rube. When texting each other, they'll refer to her as the Rube - you can just imagine what that autocorrects to!

You can turn off auto correct. On an iphone or ipad it's in Settings/General/Keyboard.

I have two. Last week an ailing supervisee sent me an email to let me know he wouldn't be in. The subject line was "Out Dick."

Today my ailing boss texted me about what to cover in a certain meeting. She finished, "This should be done in a playful way." This wouldn't be the first time she thought I was too serious or hard driving, so I dutifully texted back, "I will be playful."

Twenty minutes later she texted, "Just reread emails meant planful way damn autocorrect couldn't figure out why u said playful now I know" So I was left with the awful spectre of imagining my boss, sick with stomach flu, wondering to herself for 20 minutes, "Why the hell is Jody going to be playful at the meeting?"

Every time I think about turning it off I realize I would miss the funny things it does. Great stories ladies.
