Stuck at home, playing with my hair

My car is in the shop today, so I'm grounded here at home. I've been toying with the idea of getting a shorter cut for winter, to go with my crazy jacket collars. So here's me playing on the computer with hair length mockups. #1 is my current hair length.

Another option is to leave it long but add layers in the back as well, so that when I put it up as in pic 6, I get more of a filled out look around the face. Better illusion of a shorter cut without actually cutting.

Thoughts? Gasps of horror?

I like your hair as is. Next would #5, a radical change! I also like 4, but you look all Cleopatra to me. Not that this is a bad thing.

I don't understand hair and so don't understand what would happen with added layers in the back...

I like #2, and have been contemplating the same for several weeks! Just below collar bone is short to gals with our length hair

i think if you back combed your hair in layers then put in a pony, you could get the filled out look you are after. no amy winehouse though!

I think before you fully contemplate getting it cut shorter Rae you should ask yourself how much is your long hair a part of your style? will you feel as UWP with shorter hair? do you want to be able to put it in a ponytail or put it up?

I think you actually look fab in all of these lengths but my favourite, like Jenava, is the shortest cut.

#5 is great! If you really want a change - go short. My view on hair is that it grows back so you can do whatever you want - have fun! But I like you as you are too

You need an extreme, either leave it as is or go the shortest. You look really pretty in the shorter cut.

I actually had lots of cuts over the years and I tend to do very drastic transitions. The mid length cuts did not work for me, because I found the length competed with necklines, a lot. I had a similar cut to #5 for a while and loved it, it played nicely with my eyes. I looked super tall and lots edgier. I personally think I look better in short hair, but my fiancee likes my hair long and would die if I ever chop it off again. The only caveat if you decide to cut it? You need frequent haircuts and there is no lazy day allowance. You must care for and style your hair each and every day.. No ponytaill cop out.

I think you should go all the way - I love the short illusion of Number 6 - so edgy and cool. But if you just can't make yourself go that far, then do Number 5 - LOVE you in shorter hair! It just fits the vibe of your style!

If we are talking short, I far prefer the look of #6 - a TRULY short cut (or the illusion of one here) - instead of #5.

Well you wear all styles well. I vote keep your hair long so you have more styling options. The short bob is very flattering though.

Angie, you've been hoping?! Lol, I guess it can't be that far off my style trajectory in that case!

Shannon, if you asked me a month ago, I think I would have said I *need* my super long hair so as to not appear too masculine in my outfits. But I feel like somewhere along the line that changed. I don't know if it's all the form-fitting skinnies I wear at work, or that I've made my peace with dresses... or it could even be my love affair with Korean culture (case in point, my current hair inspiration, Ham Eun Jung)... of it could be that "edgier" stuff is more in fashion, making it harder to look edgy instead of trendy. Right now, I feel like a shorter 'do would be more UWP, and the longer version feels a wee bit more Celebutant.

Zap, I cannot imagine you with short hair! Your mod ponytail is such a signature image burned into my brain. What you said about mid-lengths competing with necklines is a *great* point. Part of my goal is to show off the necklines.

When I was in high school centuries ago, I got my hair cut for a short time at a place on Long Island called Mods and Rockers. The stylists (if you called them that) were all punks sporting various haircuts, safety pins, and hair of various hues. I remember one girl (she'd be in her fifties now, because she was older than me!) telling me as she cut my hair, how she warned her friends not to let her do anything to her hair when she was bored. Because each time she got bored...she would cut her hair shorter. And she knew that eventually she'd run out of hair to cut.

Not apropos to your situation. I just find it amusing that somehow hair is given this weighty responsibility to Change Everything, or at least entertain us with its momentary newness. I repeat that I'm not insinuating that you're saying this! I'm just blathering, in fact.

Anyhow, rae, I did not read the other comments yet. I do think that you have really gorgeous hair as it stands now. Would it look nice shorter, especially if it's not radically shorter? Probably it would. How prone are you to not looking back no matter what the outcome? Is the hair cut going to fit in with what your current style is?

You will pull off any of these lengths with bravour, and I really think #5 is a winner. It is a drastic change, but it grows back again if you tire of it. It will change your style, how exciting is that! New possibilities aways are.

I like the shortest or second shortest length. My opinion may be biased, however, as I was just looking at photos from last year when my hair was a lot shorter and I can't wait until after the wedding when I can get it cut.

Tell you how I really feel? I think you could go waaayy more UWP with shorter hair, especially since Kari introduced us to that great powdered wax. Would also spunk up the tomboy looks. Long hair will add a good dose of femininity, but so can short hair in a softer cut like the three you later posted. Of course, if you're not ready for a full-on chop (and really, if you're chopping, may as well go all the way amirite!) I do like the idea of having some shorter messy/choppy layers put in to emulate the look when your hair is up. Will give similar effects. I'm like you, I much prefer shorter hair in winter! COME JOIN ME IN SPUNKY WILD BOB LAND

Not looking at any other responses here... I thnk you bear an uncanny resemblance to citygirldc who is STUNNING in her short cut. I'd love to see you in that. Otherwise Id' suggest you start with #3 and then go shorter. It's a shock, but it can be very powerful and jump-start-like to cut your hair that much.

On the other hand, you need to think about how it will change your tomboy style - I felt the need to dress much more girly when I had really short hair. But I also looked terrible and you will not.

Also, since #5 is close to my length and cut, I'll tell you that for myself, I do not like my hair to curl under like a normal bob... I have to use a straightener to get it to have a more straight/pieced look. Hair grows directionally, so both sides will generally flip in the same direction (so one side flips out, the other flips in) with Asian hair, and that makes me insane. Just something to consider.

Mochi, I look at the transformation Suz made with her haircut as a perfect example of how hair can, in fact, Change Everything. Just sayin'.

ETA; If you're going to do a short chop you may get the bonus ups from donating to Locks of Love. That's what I did after my wedding. My hair was longer than yours!

Yeah - I think hair really CAN have a more powerful effect than most other style changes and quite instantaneously. Often a new hairstyle expresses a big style evolution in a way that one article of clothing (or even ten) simply can't do.
