Living on the border of two provinces, I witness two distinct street styles. They mirror the two solitudes we sometimes refer to when speaking of English and French cultures. Ok let's laugh a little. The following come from true observations, but are written tongue in cheek.
The Capital:
- LOTS of white oversize sneakers.
The attitude: Walking in the rain with dazzling white footwear.
What is seems to say: I know spring stood us up this year but I don't
care and I WILL wear my sneakers anyway, plus they cover my
whole feet, so...
- Some high block-heels ankle booties
The attitude: Hey, I'm sexy.
What it seems to say: Hey, I'm sexy.
- I have seen more than once the gaucho cropped denim! Worn with previously mentionned booties and a simple top. It looks fantastic!
The attitude: Tall, fashionable, eye-catching. Very refreshing in these
corners of the woods. The wearer is usually getting out or getting in
her car, or sitting in a coffee shop.
What it seems to say:
What? This is so natural for me!
- Pastel hair!
The attitude: usually younger woman with a round face, and straight,
medium length white and mauve hair. It might be a hipster thing as
some of them also sport thick black secretary specs.
What it seems to say: I'm cool and I don't care. Want to have coffee?
- Lots of elastic ankle cargo trousers too, both men and women.
The attitude: crossing the street, walking around, sulken expression,
long dark flat hair, Converse...
What it seems to say: I don't give a flying f*** about the rest of the
world, leave me alone. And yes, I got those at Forever 21. Happy? Now go!
On the Quebec side:
- The new trend of the moment: all bad-ass rocker girl with either of these: Verson A:
long limp large mesh pastel cotton sweater and fluffly, oversize and equally pale scarf, worn over tight, high-waist light wash skinny jeans, hem all the way down covering ankle and hi-top Converse in a washed out red hue.
Verson B:
- Fitted black tee with cap sleeves worn over dark denim skinny/straight jeans with the hem rolled up to uncover ankle, finished of with a pair of low-top Converse
in a washed out red hue.
The attitude: Recently seperated, basement was flooded by last month's heavy rains, but still hanging in there. Both versions are worn mostly by women over 30.
What it seems to say:
Hey, don't give up.
- Then you also have the classic "good girl" look still going strong: mid thigh tunic or sketer skirt worn over capri leggings (color, white or polka dots) and sensible footwear such as Birkenstock slip-ons, Danskos or, in the case of the more coquette ones, Miz Mooz wedge or platform sandals. Often accessorized with a scarf (young moms) or an eye-catching cocktail jewlry (sweet aunts).
The attitude: Busy young mom.
What it seems to say: I'm happy now in my young mom role, despite the lack of sleep, and my clothes choice reflect this. Everything is practical but I make an effort to keep it pretty: geometrical shapes, vivid colors... it keeps me awake!
Finally, the busy look: patch-work tunic with lots of details and assymetrical hemlines, worn over dark capri leggings and high heels. Complicated hairdos involving streaks and gravity defying layers; eye-catching cocktail jewlry. No scarf.
Attitude: Usually seen in groups walking towards the exit for a cigarette break.
What it says: I am still pretty, and I don't understand these young women wearing ugly non flattering footwear. I keep slim with diet and smoking (how else are you supposed to do it?). But in fact I'm really nice.
