Straightening fringe?

Fringe is another one of those things I have a love hate relationship with. It gets to looking bad so quickly, and I often just end up removing it.

I love this scarf, but not sure if the velvet is silk or poly, so afraid to take chances melting it with the flat iron. Haven't tried my clothes iron, but that would probably be safer.
Has anyone tried to straighten fringe? Results?

I have tried with fringe on ballroom dancing costumes, with mixed results. Steam is pretty gentle on the materials, and results would depend on whatever the materials are, some relax faster than the others.

I have ironed fringe before. You just have to treat it according to what the fiber content is. Start with the lowest heat and work up.

You might try barely moistening one strand, untangling it with your fingers, and then smoothing it out to dry. It’s a PIA, though. and now I have No Fringe on my shopping list.

On the couple of occasions when the fringe has gotten out of hand (I don’t mind it a little tangled) i just cut it off…
i would try to steam it. Or iron it under a damp towel

What does just washing/thoroughly wetting and then hang drying it do?
The pic isn’t showing up, but orange velvet sounds like a great thing for you to wear with your burgundies.

I have used a fine tooth comb, separating fringe by knot, starting at the bottom of the fringe then working up. Putzy work but rewarding for such a beautiful scarf.

That is a great question, Suntiger. I have a similar scarf in black. The material is viscose but I have no idea what the fringe is made of. No info on the label. It was a gift. I am following this thread with interest.

I have cut the fringe off scarves a few times - just below the knot - and it worked well. If that is of interest?

I actually don't know how this happened. I have ruined fringe before by washing, but I didn't this time. It's just been in my cedar chest. I don't want to cut the fringe if I'm able to make it look nicer, but usually that's what I've done.

That tonal match is pretty awesome, but is the fringe itself that special? It looks to me like the kind that’s easily available. Maybe you could have it switched out for new (and get fabric content /care instructions on the new)

I have used a comb to untangle and smooth out fringe. I generally cut it off or unknot it (if possible) and remove it totally.

You could use a damp clean dish cloth between the fringe and the iron. I usually leave it alone or send the scarf to the dry cleaners.

The look of it doesn't bother me - I guess I expect this appearance from a fine fringe.

But maybe you could try a very fine-toothed comb - like a lice comb. And then iron between towels.

Nope, I would just cut it off, or beg DD to fix it for me (she is very good with that sort of thing).

I may have a solution for you. I have done this with fringed scarves in the past, and it works like a charm, but it can take a while. A job to do in front of the TV, then.

Divide a single tassel into two equal strands. Twist each strand tightly along its length, then twist the two strands together and tie a knot at the end. Each tassel then becomes a sort of string, and the fringe is much tidier.

If this makes no sense, I will try to explain further tomorrow.

Trying it out! I have a couple pashminas that have twisted fringe that's much better behaved.
Would have to go back in time more than 12 years to do in front of TV though
Remember those Barbies that had the twisty curl machine, you could use it on your own hair too? That little machine could come in handy!
