Storing brown sugar?

One of the great mysteries of life: how do you store brown sugar without it getting hard? I've read all the advice, tried plastic containers, glass containers, ziploc, leaving bread or an apple slice in the container, buying those terracotta thingies... None of it has worked consistently. Have you found something that works for you?

I put mine in a ziploc bag and then I put the ziploc bag into a screw top container (either plastic or glass but it must be screw top for maximum airtightness). It lasts for quite a while for me that way.

I use this kind of jar to store sugar, flour, cornmeal, etc. Brown sugar stays moist in it, and I live in a desert.

I also use the jars JAileen is showing, and they work well for me with brown sugar.

I always use a "Brown-Sugar Bear" in a glass jar. It works great! Mine is broken in half but still going strong. Every so often I'll soak him for 20 minutes in some warm water, dry him off and pop him back in.

I use a tight sealing glass jar or Runcarla's Rubbermaid container ( I have the same one, red lid and all)

I use a ziplock bag, which keeps it for quite a while, but it will eventually get hard. At that point, I put in a lettuce leaf, and it's usually soft within 24 hours.

Glass jar with a screw top lid. Been storing it that way for years and have never had a problem.

If it's hard, you can soften it up by putting a chunk of it in the microwave, alongside a wet paper towel. I microwave it in 10-second intervals. The sugar sucks up the steam and it loosens it up.

We must use too much brown sugar. Mine never has a chance to get hard. I always just buy the C&H in the zipper top plastic bag.

One thing you want is an airtight seal - and if possible to get out all the air. Packing it down in your container could help.

Hmm, I always keep mine in its original bag in the pantry. They usually come with a ziplock top, and if they do not, I just roll the top of the bag down and wrap a rubber band around the bag. Like kellygirl, I think we go through it fast enough that it never gets hard for me.

I just keep in in the bag, but after removing sugar from the bag, I twist the top tightly all the way down to the sugar, then pull a rubber band over the bag, pinning the twisted top under it. I keep in a cool pantry, and it seems to stay soft.

The freezer, it doesn't actually freeze and it doesn't dry out.

I put it in a ziploc bag with a terracotta thing similar to Donna's bear (my mom picks them up from craft fairs). I rewet it occasionally and it works pretty good.

Put a piece of bread in with the brown sugar and it will always be soft. Trick I learned from mom!
