Still not used to this climate - help me dress for tonight!

We moved from the East Coast to Texas eight months ago, and summer was pretty easy - for me, vintage sundresses and sandals all summer long. But now that it's sort of in between, I am stumped! Here's my dilemma for tonight (but it's an almost daily dilemma right now)

It's in the 70s today and will stay that temp tonight. I'm going out, and I want to wear a dress because I'm so tired of jeans. The dress I have in mind is also vintage, made of a thick material but sleeveless (why did not one single dress made in the 60s have sleeves? I don't get it).

If it were warm, I'd wear the dress as is with sandals. If it were cold, I'd wear a jacket over it or a long sleeved T shirt under it and tights. But it's too warm for tights and long sleeves and too cold to wear it as is.

What about a denim jacket over the sleeveless part of the dress, and bare legs? If I did that, what shoes? The shoes I have that would match are black sandals, black ballet flats, black booties, black Mary Jane pumps, nude pumps.

Or should I just give up and wear jeans? Seriously, this should not be hard, but it's tough to dress for such in between weather!

Do you have a picture? I personally love wearing my cropped denim jackets over a dress.

denim jacket and sandals unless your feet get cold, then black booties to "winterize".

Tricia I am from England so temperatures in the 70's in the evening sounds like the height of summer to me!! The vintage dress with the denim jacket sounds fine, difficult to say about the shoes without knowing the colour of the dress, so I'll say go for the nude pumps. Hope you have a lovely time.

OK, I had my daughter snap 2 quick photos - she's only 7, so these are not taken from the most flattering angle. I feel like this dress looks way better in the mirror. Anyway, here it is by itself and with the denim jacket. Ignore my undone hair and makeup!

(I think my style might be a little weird by ylf standards...)

Fab dress! I'm not sure about the denim jacket, I think it's because the neckline of the dress is so high. It's not so obvious in the first picture because you show your bare arms, but in combination with the denim jacket it makes you look top heavy (although that might be the camera angle). I think I would go with black shoes btw, to balance the dress.

I wondered about that...I've been thinking about having the neckline of this dress altered to be more of a high V. I feel kind of bad altering that groovy collar though...

It is lovely, I agree. Do you have a jacket without collar? I think if it just goes straight down in the front (not sure how to say it?) it might work better.

Or how about a cardigan left open?

Wow, I love the retro vibe. Agree a short cardi or collarless jacket would be great. The detail on the denim jacket fights the dress, as does the collar. Booties, flats, or even knee high boots would look fab - no tights.

You could also pull on a very slim, fitted pullover sweater, and wear this as a skirt. Either a turtleneck, or something that lets that groovy collar peek through.

This is an awesome dress, and I must admit, I am a wee bit covetous I can see how tiny you are, and yet, this pattern and cut is perfect on your frame!

It's a really pretty dress! I'd go with dark footwear since the colours of the dress are mostly dark and your hair is, too. It will help "ground" the look.

Lovely dress and it looks great with your jean jacket. Your sandals would be my choice if they are warm enough. Then the ballet flats.

I hear you about the weather. I'm in east TX at the moment and the weather here gives me whiplash. Below freezing the other night, 75 tonight!

Thanks guys! I ended up wearing jeans, and wished I hadn't because it was hot! Next time, I'll go with the dress. I think I may have it altered to give it a V neck.

Yes, I am still singing! It took a while to find people here, but my husband and I are at the beginning phases of a new band and it's been so much fun and a great way to meet people. And Janet, my new duet partner and you have a friend in common. I am angling for an introduction.

I'm in southern Texas, and I usually opt for a topper & bare legs w closed toed shoes, because it's far easer to remove a cardigan/jacket if it's hotter than expected than tights. lol Of course, there's also the air conditioning to be reckoned with if you're going to an indoor venue!
