This is way over my head, Angie, but I keep reading hoping more will sink in. I did get that to add a new color, I need it in more than one item.
Olive is a great color for me, as are warm greens in general. They and warm brights: tomato red, tangerine and melons, saturated mustards, seem to compliment both base and highlights in my hair. Otherwise, I need contrast, even for as warm as I am. Tans and taupes do me no favors unless they are mixed with darker shades of brown, black, burgudy, etc. I am thrilled to know that brown will have its moment, however. It competes with black as a primary neutral for me. I can pull out the old and add new as necessary.
Once I start having to think about color, cut, silhouette, and capsules simultaneously, I am overwhelmed and check out. So far, I have learned that I like tonal looks for their lengthening effect (even on others, so my eye is really trained that way). I have learned to pair gray with washed blues and denims, for instance, and to incorporate gray and silver footwear (I never noticed that gray and light blue were tonal before YLF). I have deliberately purchased narrower bottoms and waist-surrendering tops for updated silhouettes, which was quite the change for this pear-or-hour-glass figure, and will now have to think about how to pair my boxy crops with wider bottoms for a refreshed, current look that showcases my waist again (although the menopausal tummy is the new challenge). I am slowly expanding my lower-heeled footwear, since I just can't go all day in stillettos anymore. My eye is enjoying coordinated outfits, say, two pops of color in an outfit to make it look intentional. YLF has taught me all of this, and I look forward to learning more. I want to look like I live in 2017!!
