still buying basics... and a funny about tops these days

I ordered white and black button downs with no pockets today for wearing under sweaters. I hope they work.

And has anyone else noticed this? I spent years wearing tops that were too big. I finally figured out I should get clothes that fit. And now what do I find when I shop? Tons of tops that are intentionally huge and sloppy. I don't get it.

Same story for me with clothes that were too big! I have been giving them away to my much larger framed friend. Keep looking, you will find the tops that you want!

My fashion tastes were born during the 80's, when oversized tops were king. During recent years, my friends kept telling me, "you'd look so much better in tops that fit!"

Well, now that 80's fashion is making a comeback, I'm having a hard time finding those fitted tops.

I'm constantly out of step with the times...

Brenda I am seeing the same thing. Will fitted shirts start to look dowdy to us next? Wal-mart has the fitted ones, but I don't want to look like I shop at Wal-Mart....even if I do sometimes!

The thought of fitted shirts looking dated just gives me the chills! I guess if that happens, I'll just have to wear some extra trendy jeans, boots, and jackets because I've never gotten along with big, boxy tops.

Oh I am quite mixed up. I finally have tops that fit and now I crave big and boxy to wear over them (like back in the 80's).

I hope your new purchases work out. I have trouble finding button downs without pockets and can't think they will ever go out of style in some fashion.

Oh no...if fitted tops go out of style I may have to go topless! I have seen myself in photos from the 80s and I do not, repeat, do NOT want to go there again! Boxy tops on a small, high waisted person who does have some hip action going on AND has short legs is NOT a good look!!!

I spent a lot of time wearing clothes that were just too big, cheap and shapeless pre-YLF. And fit is still something I have to be hyper-aware of when shopping. I still lean toward clothes that are too big. I think the slouchy and oversized looks can be great but there is still a line between oversized and just too big. This is something I could go on and on about because I've got issues and this is one of my big ones.

I had this same issue when one of my (ex) favorite clothing stores, J.Jill, decided that linen overalls, boxy shaker sweaters, and shapeless, ankle length sweater dresses and jumpers were all the rage. Sorry, they were the rage when I was in high school and college, and I couldn't look back. I haven't bought anything other than their "wearever" line from them since.

I think the oversized tops of today in general are softer and drape on the body more. I recall a lot of stiffer, very boxy oversized shapes when I was in high school in the 80's.
