Statement Skirt: What Kind?

Hi all,
I'm slowly picking myself back up from the floor after some weeks I'm happy to leave behind. A sign of recovery is that I again enjoy thinking about fashion and style:)

Last week I tried a black lace pencil skirt that looked great. I do think a statement skirt could be a useful addition for me, but I'm not sure wether it should be black. I already have three black skirts (short pencil, summer wool, black midi, heavier wool, A-line, cotton), but they are all very basic. I love the idea of a relaxed sweater and a dressy skirt. However, I already have dressy clothes enough to get me through the holiday season, so…

My questions: What are you looking for in a statement skirt? How would you style a lace pencil skirt to make it modern?

#1: The front. It has an elasticated waist, but it lies flat and looks great on. Hits me at my knees.
#2: The back with exposed zipper.

As for your question I firmly believe that Statement for one is regular for other. This would be my idea of statement and would get lot of use...

For a Juleboard , I would wear this with a sparkly top and heels, I can even imagine myself paring it with peach and black lacy shell and blazer... For a family meal, a relaxed sweater as you suggested. I think the key here is modern footwear and modern tops...

For my life style, this would work for office, meetings and regular day too.. Ok may be not when the baby is small but you get the picture...

That is a lovely skirt. I made myself one last year and I've worn it a few times. I wore a graphic tee with mine and a tucked in drapey shirt. I could also see it with ankle boots and a denim jacket or leather jacket and a scarf.

Do you think it is a bad choice to pick yet another black skirt? I seem to wear the basic ones I have quite a lot.

I think a black lace skirt is definitely different, and I love all of Diane's suggestions -- I love the hi-lo look of lace with denim or leather. What about with your chambray shirt and booties?

As for what makes a statement skirt? I never knew I needed one until this one jumped out and grabbed me. It's so loud I will be toning it down a la Diane.

That's a cool skirt Ingunn I really like the back exposed zipper. Adds an unexpected edge to the skirt. You could also wear it with a plaid shirt and shoes of your choice.

I don't think anyone could have too many black skirts ..... But a navy lace skirt would be amazing on you. Just saying

I donot think one more black skirt is wrong idea Ingunn. Our weather is very wild:D
A black skirt which can be worn in December cannot be worn in April forget in July:D
So a lace skirt is a fab idea IMO

I think the right type of lace skirt can be very versatile and not just dressy.
I'm more hem- conscious, though and would want to see if that scalloped hem works. Some lace skirts have either a straight hem or minimal amount of lace edge. Also the fabrication but that is less. These ideas more if one wants to wear it in an office setting vs just make different casual or dressy combo's for outside if work or if work attire is quite flexible.

I think the skirt is beautiful and quite like it with the casual sweatshirt style sweater as well as the other looks. I can also see it with a simple silk shirt tucked in and draped. Perhaps even a plaid silk shirt for a more casual outing. Here is a link that I hope works.

I love the skirt and also love the idea of a lace skirt. For myself, I might be looking for a different colour -- ink or burgundy perhaps. But nothing wrong with a black one as it is classic and easy to style. I do think it's quite different from a regular pencil skirt. Having said that, with my OWN lifestyle, if I got a black lace pencil skirt it would absolutely "compete for wears'" with my regular black pencil skirt. That is because I rarely wear skirts at home and typically only wear them in "going out" situations. So the ordinary black pencil skirt that in another woman's life might be a work skirt, in my life is a "dressy" skirt that I wear for dressing up.

My own current statement skirt is this Halogen one. Many people might wear it as a daily skirt but for me, this is a "going out" item.

Thank you for the input, ladies. I think the skirt looks great, so its not the skirt itself I'm wondering about. The scalloped edge covers my knees and I love the fit and length. What does it take for the hem to work for you, Unfrumped? I'm curious.

I love both your skirts, Viva and Suz, and I really like the styling with a plaid shirt, Dianthus. Thank you for the inspiration. Neel, if I found one in dark blue instead I would pick it up, but I've never seen any around here.

I do have a black heavy lace skirt, but is has a tan underlayer, and I love it for dressier but not too formal occasions with a subtle sparkle(lurex like) black knitted sweater. Here it is my post from last year about.

Looks like a great skirt! I like the outfit suggestions others posted. I think you can definitely use it as everyday wear if you dress it down and it sounds like it's different enough to your other skirts so that you aren't duplicating. Would you feel better doing one in one out if you get it? Or are your other black skirts all worth keeping?

Ingunn, I was specifically referring to certain work attire where an overtly sheer lacy edge reads " not business" - I don't think that's an issue in all workplaces and of course there are personal interpretations as well. I'm comparing that to some more " sturdy" -appearing lace fabrications.
None of this is necessarily relevant to your needs , it's just lace skirt talk.

Thank you for clarifying, Unfrumped. I think I understand what you mean. For me, this skirt would veer towards being too dressy for work, but not for going out with friends and dressing up for parties.

Astrid, that would make me feel better about it, but I think the black ones I have are too versatile and basic to be substituted just yet. Good thinking:)

Gosh that is SUCH a pretty skirt - I love it. I had a lace skirt once, and I do have to say it drove me a bit nuts. My watch or bracelet or rings kept catching on the lace if I was sitting with my hands in my lap, and the lace itself kept shifting around over the underlay. I was constantly fussing and fixing and worried about snagging the lace - which was a cotton/heavier kind in my skirt (from Club Monaco about 2 years ago). My shoulder bag at the time also caught on it (the hardware /zipper tab etc) . Argh - even retelling this story makes me mad at that skirt. It was so pretty and I loved it and then I didn't.

A really pretty skirt Ingunn, and glad to hear that you are feeling better. I think this skirt doesn't make a statement much on its own, the statement would come from the way you style it as in the style juxtapositions you can see in Diane's examples (at least when worn casually). Is this skirt as dramatic as what you are thinking of for yourself? To me, I would expect that this skirt could take the place of one of your other black skirts in an outfit and amp it up... but perhaps not make a Serious Statement. Which isn't a bad thing, just something to think about. How much of a statement you want it to make.

It is a lovely skirt but I agree that it may not be as different from your others as you are seeking. Perhaps it would replace one of those however and the styling suggestions here have been fantastic so it certainly has a lot of flexibility for your wardrobe. "Statement" to me does mean you want it it to be the spotlight of the outfit so I guess I'd take that into consideration. Not that the lace wouldn't be a spotlight (it's also a very feminine, sexy look to me with the lace and back zipper), I guess it just depends on how you feel about it. My own statements are pretty subtle (if at all) so for me this might be "statement" enough.

I'm so sorry, there was no time for wardrobe play today after all, and probably not until next week or so. We are so busy right now both at work and at home. I also lack a proper place to take pictures after our relocation - it's so much darker here.

But - I tried the skirt on briefly today, and I completely loved it. I think I'm going to keep it. It fits so well, it's well made, and a skirt like that has been on my wish list for some time. I might let one of the basic pencil skirts go, probably the thinnest, shortest one. I think the length is too short for work, and when I wear skirts off duty I'd like them to be a bit more fun, like this one. With some consideration, this is a seasonless skirt for me. I still adore the J Crew No 2 pencil skirt I have, so I'm not letting that go yet.

TEX, I like your point. I think this is enough statement for me.

That sounds like a great idea to me! I can definitely see this being an elevated essential black skirt for you. And of course you can still play up or play down the statement you make with it in the way that you style it.

Late to the party but I love the casual tops...grey sweatshirt, etc. with the lace...I was also thinking a denim shirt or a white tee and a jean jacket...The more casual looks really makes that one for me...
