It's a commitment.
I had (still have?) a private blog through which I kept my close friends and family updated about our family news. It was a shortcut to emailing everyone individually and endless agreeing on the best time to Skype.
I was fun. I was writing a lot, I was keeping track of the fun things we did, all my photos were sorted, edited, etc. But it takes time, a lot of it. You can easily find yourself thinking "I need to do this, write this..." and it can also loose its fun component.
I also found that once I'd fall of the track, it was impossible to catch up. Better just say "back after unplanned absence" and start from where, than to back-feed all the missing content.
But, I miss my blog and I plan to reactivate it. It's nice to have a creative outlet.
ETA: I think you already have a great concept for the blog. By all means try it at least, it will be fun. I was thinking of doing the same from my own experience (Germany for Dummies ), but never got around to it, all my observations were wrapped up in the posts of other sort.
These are just the first few thoughts. Looking fwd to reading what others will say. If I think of anything else, I'll chime in.
