Stacy and Clinton's: Color Texture Pattern Shine

As a long-time fan of WHAT NOT TO WEAR I really like Stacy and Clinton's mantra of COLOR TEXTURE PATTERN SHINE. I try to incorporate some if not all of these style principals every day when deciding what to wear. Today the color and shine comes from my red patent Clark Privo ballet flats (Yes, I love them); pattern and texture are in abundance with my skinny (3" wide) multicolor rayon crocheted scarf with luscious black eyelash yarn fringe.

I think Stacy and Clinton's mantra is both fun and useful. Any opinions or thoughts?

Oh, I have watched them for ages and this mantra makes total sense. But I don't think I consciously check off whether I have these elements in an outfit. I'm more concerned with proportions lately. I've always naturally gravitated towards textures and colors. Lately shine comes into play and honestly I'm trying to get further away from patterns lol. Had more patterns than I thought once I looked the closet over!

I am an avid fan, if not of the set-in-stone rules, definitely of watching the transformation and seeing the suggested looks. Color-pattern-texture-shine is something I do find particularly useful, especially when an outfit just seems to fall flat at first. Adding a bit of detail here and there can really make the difference. April, the Queen of the Neutral, has mastered the "add texture/shine/pattern" trick and it just works.

Mo, I'm with you - I don't use the mantra as a checklist, per se, I make sure my outfit is INTERESTING and FUN. Style will then fall into place under those circumstances.

Yep, Taylor and Marley, I really do need to post a pic or two. I am in dire need of a full-length mirror!

Mae, rules are made to be tweaked to the max and personalized for yourself. One thing is for sure: DETAILS are truly the finishing touch to ensure a polished look. That's why I watch WHAT NOT TO WEAR - the finished look is usually spectacular.

teri, I love this show. The look of confidence and joy on the faces of the 'madeover' guy or gal is priceless. Some of the folks have been through very hard times.

The best Stacy and Clinton style tip EVER: add the fitted jacket to your wardrobe. No matter what your shape, wearing fitted jackets polishes your look to megawatt fabness. I know for sure that Angie agrees!

Biscuitsmom, Yep, I've loved this show since the very beginning. It always has a happy ending! I do miss Nick, though.

Hey Joy. Stacy and Clinton used to say the COLOR TEXTURE PATTERN SHINE mantra in their earlier shows. They weren't using it as a checklist, per se. My understanding is to ask yourself: What is SPECIAL about my look? What makes it ME?

Color, well, that's obvious and I love color. Texture - brocade, suede, raw silk, chunky knits, crochet, corduroy. Pattern - that's obvious too - geometrics are my favs. Shine can come from patent leather or jewelry or a beautifully embellished detail.

Usually, color, texture, pattern and shine are in most of my outfits. I just think it's cool and fun to think about this mantra when playing around with different combinations in my closet.

Yep, he was a character! Even Stacy couldn't tame him.
Clinton is definitely more laid back. And his style is impeccable.

This mantra could be very busy, but I like it when putting together a basically neutral or monochromatic outfit as a reminder to vary texture. I think of shine as a texture and pattern too in many cases. A weave or pattern can look like a texture from a few feet away.

I've been watching WNTW from the beginning. I have learned so much! Back 12 years ago when I went from working in marketing to being a SAHM, I would have benefited from one of their ambushes. I was a lost fashion soul! I just wish they spent more time on The Rules so that the program would be more functional for the viewers. Now, it feels like its edited down for dramatic effect.

That's right, Joy. An article of clothing or accessory could indeed be multi-faceted as far as the mantra goes.

Good point. I always make sure I add color to polish off my look. In fact, I usually start with color and finish with neutrals!

Marlene, I agree with you! Seems like the rules have been glossed over in the more recent shows. Still, I learn something every time I watch this show.

A challenge? Good idea. I just keep this mantra in the back of my head when constructing a look. It's all about keeping it fun and adding some edge (that was a whole other forum topic). And after watching WNTW since the very first show, I know exactly what NOT to wear!

Two out of four works for me. I lost interest in this show a long time ago but still adore Clinton.

I love WNTW too. I almost cried at the transformation of the last person (Hillary, I think). She seemed so low on self-esteem at the beginning and by the end you could see a physical change - she held herself up so straight and commented on how fab she was. It was astonishing how much she had changed. Amazing what the right fitting clothes (and gorgeous hair and makeup) will do.

I used to watch this show every week but grew tired of the standard format of each show after a while. I definitely like the mantra to add color to an outfit and find I am most happy with my outfits when I do. I only recently started trying to incorporate patterns into my wardrobe, finding a print that does not overwhelm is sometimes a challenge! I like the add texture idea but it hasn't been a main focus when putting together an outfit for me. Adding shine, I'm least likely to do this, unless shine is also covered with adding jewelry, then I do this one everyday.

I agree about the format, but I think the newer shows are a big improvement. I will continue to watch and learn from Stacy and Clinton. They are ALWAYS entertaining!
