I have a pair of snakeskin Trotter's sandals. Very comfy, even on my extra fussy feet. I bought them in June 2012 and have worn them pretty regularly in our short summer months.

This year, when I took them out of storage, they started squeaking when I walk. This was never an issue in years past. I wore them once, and it drove me bats. This morning, the squeaking made me take them off and put on a different pair.

Anyone else ever have this problem with shoes?

Any idea what causes it so I can either prevent it from happening to another pair or fix this one?

I don't have a solution but will watch this thread with interest because I have a pair that does the same thing, only on one side. Kind of embarrassing, isn't it?!

I hate it when this happens. Sadly, I do not have a solution only sympathy. This has happened to me with a few pairs of shoes.

What is squeaking? The soles on the floor, or something inside the sole?

It is somethign inside the sandal. They squeak whether or hardwood, carpet, or tile. And one sandal is much worse than the other, which is odd.

I would like to save them, as I do still like them, but I won't wear them if they squeak.

And yes, Windchime, it is totally embarassing! You know its bad when DH notices

How annoying that is! I haven't had a squeaky shoe in a long time. But here's a wild guess: since it didn't happen before, the leather may have gotten a little dry. You could try a leather conditioner on them and see if that makes it go away.

Ok, next question, is the sole padded, or a solid piece of material?

I have the same problem!
My comfiest sandals do the same thing! It's inside the sandal and drive me crazy!

If it's a synthetic sole, it might be breaking down.

I have a pair of authentic huarache sandals that I really love but they have always been LOUD so I only wear them once a summer or so, just enough to remember how bad the squeak is.

Also, this summer I had a pair of Stuart Weitzman pumps (that I've had for several years) develop a squeak. That was mainly why I got the nude Okalas, because minus the squeak the SWs filled the nude pump hole.

So it happens across all price points and can come on over time. Sigh.

Take them to a cobbler and ask what it is and if anything can be done.

Ceit - the soles are about 1.5 inches thick. They are soft, so I am thinking they are padded. There is a strip of leather over the thick sole so that your feet are touching the leather not the sole.

Anna - The part that touches my feet is leather, but I am betting that the inner part of the sole is synthetic.

Sounds like it might just be time to part ways. I am sad as I like them, they are comfy, and I am not sure I got a good CPW from them. But I won't wear them with the squeak. I will try some of the leather conditioner I have first.

I second Firecracker's suggestion of trying leather conditioner. If that doesn't work, I would take them to a cobbler to see if anything can be done.

I don't wonder if moisture control and temperature in storage was a factor. I've read something about stuffing shoes with newsprint before storing them away.

I would take them to a shoe repair shop to see if they can do something. I am remembering hearing a hack like trying to inject powder or cornstarch into a squeaky area to help "lubricate" the area. Seems weird but also seems like it would work.

If there is an inner liner that comes out, remove that and sprinkle in baby powder. I had a pair of shoes that did this and it was amazing how well it worked. You did have to repeat from time to time.

Hi Thistle,

I know you are expecting, so first of all congratulations! Secondly, do you think pregnancy induced foot swelling or other body changes could be causing this? If a trip to the cobbler doesn't fix it, maybe try putting them away until next summer when you can wear them to chase two kiddos around.
