Since Spring I’ve been challenging myself to wear more pattern mixes. I am trying to be more creative with older items. I like pattern and have quite a bit of it in my wardrobe.
I’ve been doing it at least 3 times a week. I’ve had some hits. Some misses. And lots in between.
Sharing a few here:
No 1 (Spring): I love floral and have lots of floral items. I regularly try pattern mixing floral with floral but I think it’s quite tricky. I felt this version worked because the floral pattern of the sweater looked like a less busy version of the floral pattern of the bag. A bit matchy matchy but not quite. The sweater is around 6 or 7 years old.
No 2 (Spring): Much easier to pair floral with stripes. Both the skirt and the top are around 4 years old. I was amazed I hadn’t tried this combination before.
No 3 (Spring): I used to be very into black and white pattern mixes. Now I’m into softer, earthier pattern mixes. I wore this on a trip to Canberra. It was very warm during the day, but cooled considerably at night. The metallic scarf (which I wore as a stole) is a Missoni my husband gave me about 7 or 8 years ago. Bonus pattern mix with bathroom
No 4 (Summer): I bought the t-shirt in NYC in 2018 after going wild over the Byzantine exhibits at the MMA. I thought the pattern was very Byzantine. But it is probably more boho. The tee is blue based and I usually wear it with jeans. The skirt black based. I usually don’t like combining dark blue and black (I know many do) but there was enough commonality in the colour scheme and contrast to make me like the mix here.
No 5 (Summer): checks, stripes and dogs, the perfect pattern mix.
I think my eye has adjusted to pattern mixing and my tolerance for it is increasing.
How do you feel about pattern mixing?
