according to vogue italy, the following are big spring trends (wonky english courtesy of google translate). quite a mash-up of the '80s & '90s greatest hits with a slug of sitc thrown in.

Animalier (animal print): a classic of the summer reinterpreted with prints and animal-free materials by Burberry, Giambattista Valli, Philosophy by Lorenzo Serafini, Roberto Cavalli and Rochas.

Bike Shorts : cyclists are the new obsession of designers, elegant or sporty on the catwalk from Chanel, Fendi, Mugler, Roberto Cavalli and Stella McCartney.

Bold Blazer : Oversize jackets with nineties shoulder straps are the new trend for Alexander Wang, Chanel, Balmain, Christopher Kane and Marc Jacobs.

Bustier : the femininity of the female silhouette is enhanced once again with cups and bustiers shaped by Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Ermanno Scervino, Marni and Oscar De La Renta.

Denim Head-to-toe : in jeans from head to toe, is the look of Isabel Marant, Junya Watanabe, Miu Miu, Proenza Shouler and Stella McCartney.

Fishnet : the network is trendy for outfits by Chloé, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent and Salvatore Ferragamo.

Fringes : long or very long fringes used for the new collections of Emporio Armani, Jacquemus, Gucci, Rick Owens and Tom Ford.

Grunge : the "rotten" side of the eighties returns to the runway for Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Coach 1941, No. 21, Proenza Shouler and Vetements.

Lingerie : underwear becomes outwear with lace and transparencies from Burberry, Loewe, Maison Margiela, Marco De Vincenzo and Prada.

Maxi Dress : very wide and flimsy dresses parade on the catwalk of Kenzo, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Valentino and Victoria Beckham.

Metal : lurex, laminated or coated, the sparkling fabrics are trendy according to Balmain, Givenchy, Isabel Marant, Missoni and Roberto Cavalli.

Military : the fashion army is ready in line for Christian Dior, Dsquared ", GCDS, Givenchy and Max Mara.

Paint : stains and pantone or brush strokes are the prints of 2019 by Dries Van Noten, Issey Miyake, Louis Vuitton, Moschino and Mugler.

Pattern All Over : the unpublished mix of patterns is the choice of Arthur Arbesser, Dolce & Gabbana, MSGM, Roberto Cavalli, Versace.

Plastic : transparent pvc and waterproof materials on the catwalk from Balmain, Fendi, Emporio Armani, Jeremy Scott and Maison Margiela.

Plissé : the most classic pleating is reinvented on the outfits by Balmain, Brandon Maxwell, Chloé, Givenchy and Valentino.

Polka Dots : or just call it polka dots, it's the trendy trend for Burberry, Celine, Dolce & Gabbana, Max Mara, Moschino.

Poster Dress : photographic prints, posters or as a moodboard of images on the looks of Ashley Williams, Burberry, Jeremy Scott, LaQuan Smith and Marni.

Scuba : for the beach or even for the evening, it is the material to wear according to Calvin Klein, Etro, Marine Serre, Stella McCartney and Sportmax.

Tulle : the incurable romantic will be satisfied by the outfits by Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani, Off-White, Simone Rocha and Rodarte.

I appreciate the heads up but I personally can’t think about spring when we haven’t had winter yet,Although it’s been so mild a lot of the plants in my garden already think that it is spring so maybe the designers are right to get ahead!

Yep, afraid bike shorts already a thing for Southern Hemisphere summer- here is a pic from my Fashion Quarterly summer edition.
As to me they're what I bought my 3 year old in 1994 it won't be a happening thing!

Bike shorts are definitely a thing again! Most of the trendy gym wear companies are selling them -- Girlfriend Collective, Sweaty Betty, etc.

A few years ago, the big thing with female hikers and backpackers was the very short version of bike shorts -- booty shorts? Hot pants? Not a look I could ever make work, because those short inseams always ride up on my thighs. I'm excited for longer inseams that provide a little more coverage and stay put.

A lot of these trends sound fun to me, spring or otherwise: tulle and plissé skirts are really appealing, along with fishnets, grunge, and military styles. Can you tell I'm a child of the 90s?

Ill be happy for longer bike shorts- for the gym! I have some of those short ones now, and they ride up bad :p

Oh bike shorts, please...if we thought “leggings as pants” was a controversy, let’s see heads explode if bike shorts become mainstream. ;-P

That said, I will not be caught in bike shorts unless I am within a half hour window of riding my actual bike. Probably one of the least flattering items of clothing I willingly wear, simply because they are practical for their intended purpose.

Most of these trends sound decidedly... hmm, un-fresh to me. Are trends just cycling faster now? Or am I just getting old and cynical?

Yes...it’s a weird mash up of the last three decades. Maybe it seems unfresh because anything goes so there is no defining element that makes an impression. Maybe the newness is in the juxtaposition and mixture?

That’s a good point — or a good way of looking at it. Interesting that it doesn’t make me want to shop in any way, I feel like I could do some of this (at least the most appealing parts to me) by shopping my closet. The only thing I see that sparks a want-to-buy is the return to photographic prints.

I"ve always loved a good scuba fabric anything . Zip front jackets, seamed skirts etc....but I"m with Janet. The rest of it sounds like the trend generator threw up all over the keyboard.

I'm thinking about my Summer polka dot bike shorts with metal bustier and tulle skirt outfit, and wondering how fab it would be layered with a scuba jacket. Might throw in some fishnets and plastic hat too.

Also there is some kind of California, palm print, tie dye, OP, whatever trend coming up as well.

I rocked some bike electric blue shiny bike shorts in college. I can’t top that, so may look for polka dots instead.

Excellent Carla, now that's how to wear them! Shevia for me it's that they were a thing for my little girls in the 90s, and how they would look on me is way worse than even leggings as pants would, as now my white legs, veins etc would all be on show as well! Shorts I wear for the hottest days only and not out and about very much, certainly never to work. So we may end up with the longest thread of 2019 about bike shorts if they become something we are told we should be wearing when NOT cycling.

I’m not against bike shorts or leggings. But bike shorts on *me* as fashion. Hell no. Gah, I’m trying to flatter and cover up my thighs, not show every unfortunate thing about them!

Janet, sooo with you on bike shorts. And don’t worry! This is just Vogue Italy’s extreme perspective. They have to be fashion forward in order to stay exclusive and unique. It’s their thing. My version of the trends will be more relatable. It’s all going to be good.
