I ordered a lot for spring but alas, not much worked out. I’m sharing if any of you are eyeing any of these items. And to get your opinion on my shoe quest and on the wide leg jeans and blue-green floral top.

The H&M balloon pants I was eyeing did not work for me at all. I liked the look but could barely get them past my hips, and they gave me a wedgie on top. The larger size was ridiculous. Moving on.

… to these seventies style wide legs by Monki. I like the stiff fabric, they are comfortable, and flattering too. On the other hand, they need shortening and perhaps a little taking in a the waist. I don’t dare order the smaller size which has extra postal charges because it’s no longer in stock in my region apparently. Do any of you have this conundrum too that with more substantial denim and especially those that are high waisted, that the front sticks out so prominently? Because obviously I don’t have a model’s flat tummy. And my belly is NO fan of begin wrapped up corset style. I don't know if I can get over this.

Then I tried two different ruffle neck tops. The style seems nice but less of a slam-dunk IRL than I thought? The black and white is going back either way because unflattering. What do you think of the blue-green one?

I also tried a white peplum cardigan to replace one that is falling apart. But this turned out more of a cream and doesn’t go well with what it’s supposed to go with. Cute style, but back it goes.

Then two pairs of cream booties. I can now safely say the lug sole is NOT for me. The ones with the laces were a tie (please excuse me) but my feet slid around in them and they were a last size so here’s my question to you: should I keep trying white/cream lace up booties like this or look for a completely different style? I think we can all agree the black & white slip on style is hugely unflattering. Maybe we can also agree I need a more refined option… Maybe my ultimate conclusion will be NOT to buy any light color bootie this year since I won’t be going to the office anyway and sneakers may be a better option.

How do you feel about funding alterations? I would go with the second pair of jeans and have them taken in at the waist and hemmed. I would pass on the rest and keep looking.

I like the second pair of jeans. Hemming them shorter might be a problem, new hemline will not look authentic. You might want to chop the extra fabric and wear with a raw edge. I also like #4 top, looks great on you. I would, too pass on the rest.

The lighter jeans look like they have potential, but if the way the rise looks/feels bothers you, I'm not sure I'd go through the effort of having them altered. I'm always learning the hard way that if a pair of pants makes me feel even the slightest hesitation, I should probably say "next!"

I can't speak to the ruffle blouses because it's a style I can't really wrap my head around.

The peplum cardi outfit looks super sharp to me; are these the items it doesn't work with colour-wise? Because on my screen it looks like a pretty good match.

Also, the boots in #8 are super cool; sounds like you're not into them but that is a really fun outfit. I want to see that skirt/boots combo with the cream cardi as well!

The last pair of shoes are really good! But are they YOU? To me, you have a very distinctive style. You also flirt with trendy items, but they have to "fit in to the family". The same goes for the white peplum. I'm missing something more, maybe some more collar details? But peplum looks SUPER CUTE on you. Anyway, I see it is going back.

About the jeans, I don't know. That light wash and style is perhaps not the most flattering.. on anyone.. But apparantly I disregard my own advice completely, because I own two pairs of this style!!

I really like boots in #8. Are they comfortable? I also like cream cardigan but I may be biased because I think I have the same one in navy
Regarding the jeans, keep looking. And I think different necklines suit you better than the ruffle neck.

My favorites are the cardigan and the jeans in 3. Maybe pass on white boots, you might find a buff or fawn colored lace up easier to wear.

I don't love the high necks. I think the combination of the print and the style might be a little too staid.

I like the green ruffle top! It looks very YOU.

I think wide leg jeans have great potential for your style. Maybe you need a lighter-weight and darker pair? Those will be more comfy on the midsection.

Jumpsuit in #6 = KILLER (I know it's not new).

Pass on both pairs of boots.

The light blue jeans is a possibility with alterations. Not in love with blouses or boots ( too heavy ) but it’s more a personal preference ( can’t do high neck especially with ruffles - sorry).
The white cardigan is interesting- pity the color isn’t working for you.

Anchie, that's right, you wear Esprit so you do own this cardi! I like it but find the cream color a bad fit with all my optical white for summer.
Irina, great suggestion for the raw hems. However I think I'm going to go with LaPed, Synne & Angie's advice and keep looking.
Synne, I love your assessment of my incorporation of trends. Yes, boring as it may sound I probably need a reminder to stay on that course.

Hmm, I really like both tops--they look great on you, especially with your haircut--and I love the white and black lug-sole boots! They look super-fab to my eye, and that style is quite trendy right now (the label Boss just featured a pair very similar in their fall RTW show). Just my two cents, of course :).

I’m not a fan of either of the jeans, but admittedly I am a hard sell on this style anyway. The boots seem not quite you either, and it doesn’t sound like you like them at all — next!

I like the first ruffle neck top better than the second one, but that’s not an easy neckline to wear, IMO. How do you feel in it?

That dress in 7 is so good on you, it sets a high bar that the jeans and tops just don’t meet, to my eye.

Well, I like the ruffle shirt in #4 and the whole look of #8. Very cutting edge - but you have to be comfortable. I prefer the silouette of the first jeans, but totally get sending them back when they are a struggle to put on and aren’t comfortable to wear. Love, love, love the dark floral (two pieces - right?) but not the cardi.

Interesting try on session. Online shopping is hard. I’m struggling to find/try new things from different makers after realizing I’m starting to duplicate things I already have, just different colours.

Honestly? The only thing I didn't love here was the rainboot style white boots. I think the wide jeans need hemming, obviously. Sad you are returning the first pair (although wedgies are a deal breaker!) Cute, cute cute.

The first pair of jeans is not flattering because you are a pear shape, the peplum cardigan too, though the neckline is good, if you could find one that goes straight down without the flared part at the end. They widen your hip area. The second pair of trousers looks much better. The first pair of jeans also shortens your torso a lot I feel. Or you could try a bootcut style that is also loose-ish around the hips too.
Have you tried puff sleeve tops? They will widen your shoulder line to balance your hips. I've always wanted to wear them as they look so cute but alas I have very wide shoulders already so no more widening for me.

Everyone, you are cracking me up! Love for the boots I felt ridiculous in, and for the 'outfit' where I didn't bother changing the top half - just wanted to see the skirt with theboots :-D.
Thanks for the nice feedback but yeah, I'll go with my feelings.
N, puff sleeves are hit or miss. I find them generally fussy and the widening effect somehow looks wrong on me. A subtle style I would like though.

Carla: online shopping is SO hard. I was thinking whether I'd do a seperate post on online goggles (like sales goggles) because 50% of this haul I could have immediately excluded if I'd seen the items IRL... But I do want to experiment...

I am sensing that you have a lot of doubt about these items. If you are uncertain or uncomfortable about something my guess is you will be unlikely to wear them. My recent rule of thumb is that I should love what I buy from the start, not grow to love it. I would return everything except the jeans you like and pay to have them altered. All the items I have had custom altered turn out to be my most worn and last longest in my wardrobe.

Nice! I like the first jeans. I would pair them with a loose, untucked tshirt or something like that. Something that falls away from the body (a-line).

You should try a different style of boot that’s less chunky, because it sounds like the lug sole type is not your thing. Maybe it’s your thing on paper, but not in real life.

For the tummy protrusion issue, I would pick a Jean rise that cuts across the belly to holster it in a little without going full-corset mode. Or wear something over it.
Or, when tucking, pull the shirt out a little bit.

More love for outfit #8! I am with LaPed on the jeans - if you have any doubt, send them back. I have also learned (the hard way) that if I don't LOVE the pant from the get-go, they are never right. I have enough experience with alterations on bad pants to know what my tailor can and can't fix, but if there is any fit issue outside of his magic skills, then I let it go.

As for the boots - what about a simple, white high-top sneaker? Not necessarily a lug sole or platform sneaker, but a good mix of the sneaker you have in #1/2 and the white lug boot.

This is exactly the reason why I gave up on heavy denim- there are so many fab thinner fabrics out there love my tweed wide legs and plaid cigarette pants- I only wear jeans for extra casual anyway, so why bothering?
Then, about the white boots, I kind of like

the chunky chelsea slip on flatform style

and favor them(!)to the lacey ones -why don't you like them??

Thanks everyone for your insights. Lynn, I dislike the platform booties because they draw a disproportianate amount of attention to my feet, make them look clunky and I find the overall effect kind of like duck feet ;). I don't have this problem with other people which is why I tried them but on me, no, I kind of hate them.
