Speaking of heels...

I'm sorting shoes... and guestimating 100 pairs, 60 or so of which are in serious rotation. I guess the thing is, I wear more than one pair a day. Office, bakery, dog walk, late dog walk, running errands.

Anyways, my collection of high heels has dwindled to less than ten. I went looking for more, but not there. Apparently I've given a lot away. But get this... I can't fit them back into the closet! I haven't reconfigured my shoe storage during this sort.

Does this happen to anyone else? You organise and give stuff away, and find yourself with LESS storage space?

Yes, and then I wonder how it multiplied as I removed it! By the way, I no longer feel so bad about owning so many shoes! Yours makes my collection look small :-). I'm catching up though.

Interesting. I am on an organizational bent at this time so clutter cleaning/organization are at the forefront of my brain.

As I work my way through the house, I am finding I have more space. Added space is due to giving some stuff away and better organizing other stuff.

I am curious as to why you are finding less space. I wonder if you changed any type of organization (to make things more visible)? I could see how a change in organization might result in less actual space to store things. But in my heart, I believe you probably improved your system.

Do you have pictures you could share?

Maybe more of your shoes are visible and accessible to you now? My shoe collection has exploded since joining YLF, but I find that it is good for my feet to change shoes during the day and I never wear the same pair 2 days in a row. Heels, except for kitten heels 2" or less, have nearly disappeared though and are not missed.
My best shoe storage is in 5 flat underbed plastic boxes that slide under my side of the bed in a row. I have them organized by use and type...athletic and workout, ballet flats, high vamp like oxfords and loafers, booties and boots, and sandals. When I pull out the box, I can see everything and they are east to put away. My few pairs of kitten heels are in boxes in my small closet.

I fully understand how this is possible! I bet your organization looks better now, though is more space demanding. Just like the designer stores or closet ads with only three pieces hanging there. Looks so organized and streamlined. IRL you have more than three colour coordinated pieces that fill up the closet...

Maybe it's because they're all in use, so it's harder to store because you're constantly having to rearrange them? And yes, three garbage bags later and my tiny closet area still looks like it's overflowing!

Perhaps your footwear is more visible now, and taking up more space?

I am laughing at this situation! but I have no answer.
Also, you gave me a brilliant idea: to wear more than one pair of shoes a day, on purpose. That would give me more opportunities to wear the ones I have.

I think I need a quantum physicist. But pretending this is a rational problem, I'm thinking it's because I put my flats where my heels were but the heels don't fit where the flats were.

I don't have pics of my closet. It's not pretty. The movers thought I was an artist because of my junk...

Makes total sense. Tossing stuff in a heap takes up way less physical space than arranging things in neat rows all facing the same direction. It's a dirty little secret that we manic organizers don't want to admit because then we'd never convince our SO and kids to clean up their closets and spaces.

Hah! Magically shrinking closet. But seriously, I couldn't even store that many! I have 16 pairs total, and that includes my workout shoes.

I do so much walking. It takes such a toll on my shoes, and I hate the idea of throwing all my outfits out of whack every month.

OMG. I didn't think of that, Windchime. What if the size of my closet reflects the size of my shoe collection and it shrinks further and further the more I give away?

Omg. That is just the sort of thing that would happen to me.

Yes. I just organized my sweaters, purged a bunch, and still can't fit them back in the drawer. I think it's because they were crammed in before and now that they've been properly fluffed and folded, they are demanding their due share of space.

Ok. I'm getting ruthless now. I'm dumping stuff just because I got it a long time ago.

I just have one little new problem: it's a lot to carry out to the car (which also has no room in it).
