Speaking of dresses... - YouLookFab Forum

In addition to Rachy's hilarious-but-true thread on the issues with dresses this spring http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/the-scream, I thought I'd give you a quick update on the EF linen blend dress that I ordered (here's my original thread http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....s-ef-dress).

It arrived yesterday all beautifully packaged from my favorite EF eBay seller. The fact that you did not see it yesterday should tell you something...nor are you EVER going to see it on me.

In defense of the dress, it is beautifully made and the fabric has a lovely weight to it without being stiff. I was excited when I unwrapped it and felt it between my fingers...and then I put it on. A rather horrifying expression came upon my face as I turned to face the mirror...what looked back at me was not the image I had hoped for of a chic, middle-aged but stylish woman in a go-anywhere dress that she would wear for years with confidence and sass. No. Instead I gazed upon a short, middle-aged woman wearing a sack that had her looking like a 4 foot x 4 foot blue colored brick. No amount of seaming in the back waist area could help this dress sit nicely on my odd little body and trying to give it shape with a belt was like trying to put out a fire with a medicine dropper...wasn't gonna happen. I could barely get the buttons undone quick enough to get it off, fold it up and repackage for a prompt return.

However...chin up...I know it's the dress, not me...

As much as I'm laughing at your wit, I am feeling your pain. I love EF but so many of her pieces are made for statuesque women. Her items are among my wardrobe faves for style and ease, and I love how well made they are. But I find I have to try them on IRL before I can get any idea of how they look. So it's *definitely* not you, Shannon. Just keep looking at your stunning Corporate Denim post from this morning and repeat, "Can't beat this EF!" I hope the seller takes it back.

Aliona - I have a number of EF pieces and love them to bits. But man, when they don't fit they can be REALLY wrong!

Hilarious, Shannon. And I'm glad you could see it that way. I have put on many an item like this and couldn't get it off fast enough! It's so much worse when you've had a wonderful fantasy of how this item will be the perfect wardrobe addition. Ugh. Oh well. Onwards!!

That is such a horrible experience to have something you had high hopes for not be right for you. It's not your "odd little body," it's "sack of a dress has no shape." When I see a rack of all the same garments on a sale round, I know from the start, "there's something wrong with this because it was universally not purchased." Good to know and now, a dollar saved toward a more perfect item.

Lol, too funny! Very hard to imagine you looking less than fabulous in ANYTHING, but I can certainly understand how a garment can fit NOT AT ALL the way we imagine it would.

I see that square little woman in my mirror also and it is not you, it is the clothes, honest. You look so sporty and pulled together in your outfits.

Your body is NOT the issue! And while it may be little, it certainly isn't "odd". The dress simply isn't fab enough for you. And I have to wonder about this square little woman appearing in so many people's mirrors, because she's made a few recent appearances in mine, too.

Boy do I know that feeling.....it is a relief to send the item on its way again!

I had this with a shirt dress last year, it was so hideous I hardly even glanced in the mirror, I was scared it would crack...

Got to laugh sometimes about these things!!

It is not you, Shannon! Your posts this week have you looking particularly good...and I did not want to post 'slim' because everything is so up and down in this world and looking trim isn't the only way of looking beautiful or good!

EF can easily go wrong on small people. It's the dress. Next.

Shannon it was worth trying... cos now you know:) But you do know it's the dress not you right. I think the fabric has a lot to do with this style working or otherwise for those of us with curves. It's just that THIS one doesn't suit you.

I think we've all had that experience, Shannon. Thank Goodness you were able to try on in the privacy of your own home and not in one of those ghastly communal changing rooms that used to exist (I hope they are long gone). I've had some cringe-worthy moments in those!

Shannon, you are too funny...and a good sport! I find EF so completely hit or miss. For every piece that works well on me, I think there are ten that are downright awful. And dresses are particularly difficult, for all of us it seems!
