Speaking of dated, are any of these old-ish trends dated now?

On the whole topic of dated, there are trends that were very popular at certain point in time; which I find tend to date much faster. I personally try to judge whether their expiration date has been reached by looking if contemporary retailers are still offering them in the stores, which may not be the best determinant. Anyway, most of these were very popular a couple of years ago, and I still see them around, but since I am preparing for a big weekend spring closet cleaning, it would be useful to know what the general opinion is.

1. True cascading cardis, not just open.
2. Ombre/degrade effects/patterns
3. Ikat prints
4. Square-toed flats

I love posts like this and am looking forward to reading about your spring closet cleaning.

I still see the cascade cardigans pictured online. Ombre looks to be replaced by
huge blocky color block segments. I see more ikat pictured in accessories like
purses.

I don't have any of these trends. The one I like, the ikat, well, I don't like to be in style
that much plus I shy away from ethnic trends. I have to resist all the time because I like strong graphics.

Great questions! I am especially curious on the cascading cardis. Not done well, they can border on frumpy pretty easily.

Oh, I hope not. I have just fully embraced the waterfall cardigan and I LOVE it ! I don't have ombre, but I think it is soooo cool. Ikat always seems to be around in some form in the Spring, at least around here. I am not sure about square toe shoes, though those don't seem very pronounced.

I'm personally sick of cascading cardigans. Ombre may have peaked. Ikat is still around, but judging by the amount of hits on ShopStyle, it's waning. I just bought this season square toed ankle boots from Acne.

I don't think so. Partially because I wear cascading cardigans, square toe flats and love the living heck out of ikat print. So maybe it is outdated and so am I!

Thank you all for the replies, I am enjoying reading them a lot. I obviously already have these (each in more than one item) in my closet, so my question is more along the line of "Are they so hopelessly dated I should get rid of them now or I could wear them for at least one more season "? I am quite aware that they are not the latest and greatest.

Nothing here is dated at all. Perhaps not "on-trend", but certainly not dated.

I feel that cascading cardigans were over supplied in the market place and I am personally off them - does not mean that they are un-stylish though. Does that make sense, Tanya?

What Angie said! I have a cascading jacket and a couple of cascading cardigans that I wear but try to ensure I pair them with very streamlined and modern items, and I have loved and worn square toed shoes "forever". I dont care if they are in or out...I love them

I think cascading cardigans might even be 'standard' as an option nowadays for those who cannot do the structured blazer look. It has been around for years and years now, like skinnies, so I don't think they will fade.

However, ombre is just hitting a high as is Ikat. So enjoy those awhile more

I think in general shoes are allowed to be more personal nowadays instead of being in and out. There are trends but no ONE trend like in the past.

Well, I'm greatly relieved with Angie's response as I too am just now enjoying some of these and bought my first cascading cardigan last year and love how it looks on me. I find it very slimming and lengthening. And I just bought an ikat dress last week. Whew.

Interesting how there is a distinct difference between "I am so sick of seeing this everywhere" and "dated."

I bought my cascading cardigan in the fall/winter of 2010. I specifically hunted for a grey one and really had to look hard. I remember walking through the food court at the mall and it seemed like every single woman had one on, but I could *not* find one in any of the stores. I finally found one at TJMaxx and enjoyed wearing it a lot that winter. This past winter, however, I got tired of it and didn't wear it much, but I don't think they're out of style.

I wonder at Laura's comment (and another I just read somewhere) about the line blurring between IN and OUT items style-wise. I don't know if things are changing in the fashion world or if it's just YLF's influence on me, but it seems like anything short of "mom jeans" can be rocked by someone, somewhere, depending on their age and personal style.

Claire, I think your last point is true, and I also agree with Laura that there's a distinction to be made between "I'm so sick of this" (personally) and "That is dated."

Also, as some have implied, certain items can become signatures of our own personal style and whether they are in or out becomes irrelevant to us.

I just got a pair of square toed flats on sale; I am sure they are a few seasons old but they don't look dated to me.

I still wear all but ombré myself (that trend just never called out to me) and see all 4 frequently in stores and on the street. Tanya, you also wear your clothing-even if the items are not brand new-in a very crisp, tailored way that I think contributes to items not looking aged or dated. I'm not sure if I am explaining it well, but to me there is something timeless about your outfits, even when you are wearing on trend items.

I see the Ikat prints in tops and accessories a lot. I have been eying an Ikat scarf at Nordies for awhile. I see the cascade cardi but am not fond of them. Square toed shoes are definitely still around and Janet just posted some cute ombre tights the other day. These are not cutting edge but they are definitely still mainstream and offered in stores.

Once again, I truly enjoyed reading your clever responses. So much food for thought here!

I am perfectly fine wearing something that in general people are sick of as long as I am not and the item is no dated. Cascading cardis are quite practical for me for my work in the lab. And I will make sure to wear my ikats and ombres a lot this summer, in case they do become dated soon.

Although I am still wearing open cardigans, I passed on waterfalls a year ago. That is my personal preference. I still have an ombre top that I wear from time to time, the cut is still very on trend and that helps a lot. As for ikat, I was just eyeing a pair of ikat printed jeans at Saks this morning! Can't comment on the flats as I don't wear them. But I think square-toed and pointy-toed both have a place right now.

Thanks for starting the thread Tanya -- some great responses! I am finding that I wear my cascading cardis less often now, in favor of more structured cropped jackets. But I'm with you -- wear something if you are not sick of it (and even better if it works well for your lifestyle!)

Yay! I love ombre but never found just the right thing, and I was thinking of dip dying a jacket to get the effect.

I don't think any of these things are dated, but could be worn in a dated way, if that makes sense. The design elements in themselves aren't dated, but some ombre items from 2000 or so might look dated because of the combination of other elements like rhinestones or something.
