Tam, I meant to answer your question a few days ago about which Birkies I like for you. Before I do, what is it about the Birkenstock in particular that you love? Brands like Ecco, and Mephisto make a strong look alike in prettier options. Is the comfort level radically different? I did not think so, but then I find Danskos very uncomfortable so my feet are probably not the best judge for this type of shoe.

Angie believe it or not apart from the comfort factor, I actually think Birkies look good. They have a "natural" or "earthy" vibe that resonates with the hippy in me. The styles I have linked to previously, especially so. I think they look a lot better than a lot of the clunky slides/mules out there. There is no way I would ever chose to wear slides - they scream matronly to me. I know am I in the minority on this one though!!

I haven't tried on any other comfort sandals, so I can't comment how they compare comfort-wise. For me birkies are 24 hours shoes they feel that good!

I'm with you on the birks being, well maybe not 'cute', but definitely nice looking in their own way (and imo also better than many other clunky sandals, but that is indeed personal :).

The boho look is probably key: many girls I know who are drawn to those looks also like birks.

I have a boho edge but I'm not a fan. I'm with Angie: not cute, but not awful. When I used to take the train to work, there was this girl who wore these (the Gizehs) every day and she always looked great. In fact, she wore them with skinnies, which is not something I would normally think is a good idea (I would personally opt to have as much of the shoe covered, so it just looks like a thong sandal and not a Birkenstock), but she pulled it off. She had a very simple, clean, casual style. She was gorgeous and had a cute little figure though, so she could be Godzilla from the ankles down and it really wouldn't matter.

I hear you, ladies. Birkies are better than awfully heavy caveman sandals. The fact that you have a strong hippie edge to your look, AND that you live in a hot climate really helps you out with the Birkenstock thing, Tam! Saved by the skin of your teeth!

This was funny to read. No way , I was around in the 60's and 70's and I didn't like them then. I don't think they look much different.

But I will say if anyone can make them look cute it would be chewy. I will wait for the stiletto version .

You know what, I think I like the flatter, less rounded sole of the birkies better than the rounded options like eccos have. Black plastic actually looks more "geary" to me than the simpler birkie style. That pedantic opinion aside, I actually don't mind some of these believe it or not!

There are a few that look clunkier than the birkies to my eye! The Mephisto Agacia's & Affias have too much leather on top and around the back of the shoe.

The Mephisto Bjorgs are a bit too "slidey" for me liking. Plus the gold hardware doesn't do it for me. I like the sole though!! Didn't you and Angie both post this shoe Maya???

The flower alone is enough to scare me off the Mephisto Babata. Too much leather on top too!!

I'll admit I don't mind the Mephisto Adrias, but I like the Birkenstock Mayari Birko-Flors a whole lot more! That's the exact Birkie I currently wear, except mine are plain black!!!! The silver looks nice too. I also *really* like the look of the Birkenstock Kairo.

The one that intrigues me most is the ECCO Living Thong. The red and purple look really fun!!! I have coloured flats, but only black and brown sandals. I wonder if these will come into Ecco stores in Australia closer to summer. I will definitely take a look!!!

So to sum up my current sandal situation, I'm keeping a close eye on the Brulees on zappos. If they go on sale I'm planning on snapping up a pair of 9.5 Pewters. Closer to summer I promise to check out the Ecco store here. Otherwise I'll go with a non-black pair of Birkies. Do we have a deal?

I guess I am a hippie at heart, because I've liked all of the styles posted LOL
It's a good thing that I found a comfy pair of Born Concept thong sandals for $25 on sale, because if I came home with $200+ sandals, something would hit the fan!
