Speaking of aging: here's a great essay

There's been a lot of talk about aging here on the forum lately, so I wanted to share this essay on the subject. It offers some insights and positive ways to view aging that I've never heard discussed in quite this way.

I like the idea of turning away from a deficit model of aging. And I certainly agree that it is foolish to lump 40 year olds and 80 year olds in the same category!

Thanks for sharing that. I wonder if eventually our society might start to move in a direction of celebrating what aging can bring, as we are now living longer and many people are waiting longer to get married, have children, etc. It would be nice, wouldn't it, if the focus were not so much on avoiding aging. After all, getting older sure beats the alternative, right?

Thanks so much for posting this, Nancy. In under a week I turn 50. In the fall I went through menopause. So two big "old" milestones are smacking me in the head at the same time. I am having good moments and some really, really bad moments. Yes there is a LOT of mourning going on for me at the right now and I am in the position of deciding how I want my next chapters of my life to look. I am so happy to see that there are other ways of looking at the aging process. I am printing this out and pinning it on my wall.

Loved this, thank you! I often find mind going crazy with stereo types of what it is to be a particular age, t's article was inspiring and reminded me of the luxury and extravagance of a life lived into "old" age.

Here's another article I found today. A little more in-yer-face but I like her attitude about dressing and middle age. Her comments about refusing to be invisible resonated with me. Also her point about being a woman vs a lady. Excuse the F-bombs....

Marlene, she makes a good point. I don't want to look like a middle-aged lady either!

Hang in there. I absolutely hated turning 50. Dreaded it. But once it was over, that was that. Somehow, the anticipation and buildup around those milestone birthdays is the worst part. Once you arrive, you realize you're going to be ok.
