My other friends are often confused when we get together with my Indian friends and none of speak the same language (Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi...) - most of us DON'T speak Hindi because if we grew up in the US we spoke whatever our family's language is - though I understand enough to watch Hindi movies (can't tell you how many times I watched Sholay as a kid)...
