sort of O/T body image and video playback

So I finally bought a dance/karaoke video game for my ps3 move today. First, it's entertaining as all get out - but more interesting to me was the video playback. My experience may be different than others but I thought, "that girl can't be me - her arms are gangly and she looks skinny!!!" But what I came away with was that what we think we see in the mirror might be a lot different than what others see in us. I never considered myself to have a distorted self image but this was truly weird to watch . . .

There are two things I will never do:

-Listen to recordings of myself
-Watch recordings of myself

I don't care what the perceived benefit is. I just won't do it.

But take comfort in knowing that I think it makes everyone cringe a little. Or a lot.

That is interesting, Mo. I am interested to try it, now, because I bet something similar will be true for me. Sometimes I don't recognize myself in pictures.

I HATE watching myself on video. Mostly it's because I hate the way my voice sounds on video, but also because I notice how much I slouch!

Incidentally, when I was a grad student, I once participated in a seminar series where students gave presentations on their research to their peers and other department members; one of the training "benefits" of the seminar series was that they had a practice talk before the real thing where they taped you giving your talk and then you were supposed to watch the tape afterwards. To my knowledge, NOBODY who participated in these seminars ever watched their own tape. I think I still have mine buried somewhere around here, unwatched.

I thought it is just me hating to see myself in the video (or pictures)!
When I was in Toastmaster club we sometimes tape the speech so you can see yourself afterwords. Boy, that was quite a revelation - you never suspect what facial expressions and mimics do you use - but it was pretty useful to see where you can improve.

Ha! This is one of the reasons I switched my journalism focus from broadcast to editorial waaaaay back when. That and I decided television journalism was for the less-intelligent.

I think it's very natural to be surprised by how you sound and look on video. I definitely was and still am.

However, the more you do it, the more "normal" it becomes. So I am told.
