socks over tights ?

hello, this is karin from germany. here my question for winter: on cold days i sometimes put on a pair of tan sheer tights under my jeans for warmth. in addition to this is usually wear low-heeled comfortable loafer shoes. and: i keep the tights covered by wearing a pair of black cotton socks on top of them. as a result, it looks as if i'd be wearing no tights at all, the tights are hidden under the socks! what is your habit? let your tights show between shoe and jeans - or cover them under cotton socks?

I also wear tights under my pants for warmth in the winter- black wool ones. If it's that cold, I am wearing socks and boots or booties- my feet would be too cold in loafers. So, everything stays hidden anyway.

thanks for the answer! so do you think as well, sheer tights should be hidden by boots or socks, when worn under jeans?

Hi Karin from Germany! I wear tights under my jeans for warmth too, but it's always with boots so you never see them.

Hey Karin from Germany! I wear tights under my jeans also - and I don't always cover them with socks - it kind of depends on the type of shoe that I wear - I would think that if you wear loafers, that a pair of sheer tights would look just fine without socks - they would look like a pair of dressy socks - no one would know the difference, would they?

Hello Karin! I actually never wear tights under pants, I usually layer on top and wear tall warm boots and longer down coat and feel no need for tights. I do wear knee high socks over the skinny jeans or leggings though...

It gets too hot here even in winter to worry about doing this. However, I thought it was a great idea!

Initially when I saw the post title " socks over tights" I thought, sounds like fun for the game. LOL.

when i'm sitting, the hems of my jeans ride up and show the pantyhose fabric above the shoes. i used to think, pantyhose under pants is for warmth only, the best solution is not to show them. the message is: "i don't wear pantyhose at all"! with socks on top noone can see the difference between "pantyhose under jeans" and "just socks with jeans"!

Here in Portugal we don't have that much cold, so I use only tights

@rute: thank you for the answer, maybe you could make a vote: would you in colder weather cover the pantyhose or let them peek out between jeans and shoe ?

Perhaps wear longer socks? Or perhaps your jeans aren't long enough? When I sit my tights don't show above my socks x

@louise: i guess we misunderstood each other. i don't write about tights showing over the socks; i wrote about tights showing between jeans and shoe, if you' not wearing socks ! but i think i can tell from your post, that you do cover your tights by wearing socks over them - am i right ?

LOL, karin as soon as I turned the computer off this morning I realised I had totally mis understood your question oops sorry!
I very often wear tights under jeans and trousers for warmth. Usually I wear boots also so the tights don't show but if I was wearing shoes and tights under jeans I would probably go for nude tights or keep the tights the same colour as my shoes say black tights wth black shoes. Mostly I wear knee high socks and tights as well for extra extra warmth x

louise: i've found, that "nude" tights never look real nude; they usually differ a little from the skin tone; besides they usually are identified as tights by the clearly visible nylon fabric around my ankles ! so i've found, that a pair of simple black cotton socks pulled over the tights are the best solution to create the "no tights"-look !

Ich muss sagen, dass ich auch gerne mal eine Strumpfhose unter meinen Jeans trage, meistens dann mit Stiefeln. Wenn ich niedrige Schuhe anhabe, trage ich entweder wie du Socken darüber oder trage eine Strumphose in schwarz oder einer anderen passenden Farbe, sodass es aussieht als würde ich Socken tragen.

P.S. For everyone, I do the same as you all. I wear tights with boots or I wear solid colored ones where you can't see that they aren't socks. I have also worn socks with tights before. (I couldn't resist and wrote a little bit in German.)

ja astrid, stiefel zur hose trag ich auch oft, da ist die strumpfhose sowieso unsichtbar ! aber die klassische schwarze feinstrumpfhose überm halbschuh ist doch meist als solche erkennbar. darum kommen bei mir immer socken drüber - und schon siehts 100 % so aus, als hätt ich gar keine strumpfhose an !
sheer black nylon between shoe and pants is the pantyhose/tights-look, that i don't like very much. that's why i add a pair of black cotton socks to make the pantyhose invisble !

I wear socks over tights all the time. Sometimes I do it to top off a boot and show the top of a sock. Sometimes I wear a pair of socks UNDER tights because if they are really delicate I worry abaout ripping them in the heel. And of course, always for warmth!

Excuse my ignorance if the answer to this question is too obvious, but I've been puzzled by this topic for a few days and I still can't figure out what style sin is committed or which rule is broken by wearing by tan tights under the jeans

@ellie: i used to think, that jeans and flat, comfortable shoes look much better with cotton socks than with sheer hose. it's just that little extra of warmth, that pantyhose can bring when worn under jeans. but i never liked them visible between shoe and pants. so i found that socks pulled on top create that perfect "no tights"-look.

Ich finde es toll dass Sie in Berlin sind! Ich war fuer 12 Jahre in Heidelberg; ich werde das Erlebnis nie vergessen. Deutschland finde ich einfach wunderschoen. Ebenfalls is ganze Europa wundervoll!

barbara, yes heidelberg is nice, i know it ! yes boots are a good option to keep the tights covered. why don't you wear other kind of shoes ?

I wear tights under my jeans only when it's REALLY cold. That calls for some seriously warm footwear, usually boots. Rieker boots are my favorites. I have several pairs!

With tights and skirts, I usually wear ballet flats or suede scrunch boots. It doesn't get terribly cold here in North Carolina. The winters in Germany were much colder!

i don't like to show my tights if worn under jeans, also the waistband: allways wear a long Tshirt tucked in to hide the pantyhose waistband from views !!

Hi girls, it's winter here in Australia and for school, part of our uniform is a skirt with tights. I don't know if I should wear simple ankle length socks (like usual with shorts) over the tights or just no socks at all, and have the shoes worn with the tights. What are your suggestions and what do you think looks better?
