Social Distancing in the Desert

My husband and I went birding out in the desert yesterday. We were in a wetlands area of at least ten square miles. We had gone there two times before to see a particular bird. We were the only ones there. Now that is social distancing!

Usually I take a picture of my outfit to make my post “fashiony”, but I never got around to it. I wore hiking pants, a hoodie, a nanopuff vest, hiking shoes, and a Tilley hat. It was a gorgeous day.

Great photos! It looks like a beautiful day! Must have been mild if you only needed a vest. The boys are too cute!

Kelly, thank you. It started out very chilly and warmed up to the upper 50s. I was down to a short sleeved tee in the afternoon.

Angie, thank you. We have been reluctant to let the boys off leash. The Jack Russell is fast and if he were to see a rabbit, we thought we might never see him again. The Scottie is not as fast, and we figured we could probably catch him, if need be. It turned out they stuck around. And I left the car door open and they were happy to sit and wait for us.

Amazing! Around where I am, if you go out to take in nature, you run into crowds.

Your desert looks so beautiful. It's wonderful that you can get out and enjoy time together bird-watching.

Firecracker, thank you. We’ve been to this same wetlands before and run into people - people we know! We were over an hour out of town. I think everyone is at Costco looking for tp and hand sanitizer.

I love your bird threads!

We put up a bird feeder this year, and it has been endlessly entertaining. The mourning doves that usually hang out on the roof of the neighbour across the street have taken up residence on our trellis and shed. DH occasionally has to rescue Juncos from inside the shed. They feed from the seeds spilled on the ground by the chickadees, and in advert entry slip between a crack between the doors. We get jays, cardinals, and goldfinches.

Carla, thank you. We have a peach tree right out the back door. It has all the bird treats hanging from it. We’ve had least and American goldfinches, Steller’s and scrub jays, juncos, mountain chickadees, red breasted nuthatches, spotted towhees, downy woodpeckers, northern flickers, and even a Cooper’s hawk! When he showed up, he looked so sad because everyone else left without saying goodbye.

Sterling, thank you. I hope you do. I think it just makes you more aware of your surroundings. Not just birds, but trees, shrubs, even clouds.

Love the birds, and the doggies too of course! We had a lot of crows in the yard yesterday. They were tossing up leaves for some reason. DH thought looking for bugs to eat.

Suntiger, thank you. I love seeing birds doing interesting things. Crows are omnivores, so they could have been looking for bugs. Jays are in the same family. We watched a Steller’s jay burying acorns, and a scrub jay coming along and unburying them, right behind him.

DH and I Just walked our neighborhood (sadly our beloved XC center closed as a non essential business - xc was a great way to destress and social distance was working well) and the mountain chickadees were out in force. Those birds are resilient! It is 38 degrees and snaining, Turning to snow later. It’s headed your way. Stay safe and warm.

Karen, thank you. It was at your XC center that a chickadee landed on my hand, years and years ago. What a magical moment! I remember it like it was yesterday.

Gorgeous! We hiked yesterday in our nearby national grasslands. As expected, it was completely deserted. Everyone badly needed to get out of the house, and that was a good way to do it. The only bird of note was the ubiquitous western meadowlark, but I do love to hear them sing!

Becky, thank you. We saw tons of meadowlarks. They are such a treat. A couple years ago we drove to Minnesota and saw miles of grasslands - gorgeous!

Stunning pics. I admire your version of social distancing. I have been much more interested in the birds in our yard since being confined to the house so much, but couldn't name most of them. Their songs are so musical and varied. I have a renewed appreciation for nature these days.

Christel, thank you. I wonder if there are bird guides online. Maybe you have one at home. Growing up, we had one, but no one looked at it!

Cindy, thank you. I know you’ve been worked to a frazzle, but it’s important to take time to smell the roses, so to speak. Taking in our natural surroundings is good for our mental health.
