Small change, big step - anyone have these moments?

Thanks to Auburn, I 've switched to wearing lighter lipcolors. I was surprised that it was so hard to do; I think it was one of my "fears" along the theme that NancyLee raised. It's a small change, but for me it was a big step and a gateway to a different look for me.

Anyone else try a small change and feel a huge difference?

I often feel like the small changes make the biggest differences. I have been experimenting with make up a lot recently, and that makes a huge difference to me.

yes - getting my white watch. Now, all of a sudden accessories have burst into full color for me. In my head, anyway. I haven't translated it to purchases quite yet besides my purple crossbody bag and thin red belt. I always kind of wondered at the idea that you can change up an outfit with accessories. Seeing as how 95% of mine are all the same tone, no wonder I couldn't quite figure that out. Now I'm actually thinking in terms of buying a red cashmere scarf instead of a red velvet or cord jacket. Ta da! Progress.

I felt this way the first time I used blush.

I'm doing the opposite of you right now and trying out brighter lips... not convinced I like it, but it's fun to branch out.

Una, I love it! I clicked on this post with NO idea that I'd get a shout out--how fab!
And I've been completely remiss in not commenting on the lighter lip you've featured in recent pics. I think it looks fresh and youthful. Kudos to you for being willing to step outside your comfort zone a bit and take a suggestion from a total stranger!

alaskagirl, i agree so much! for me it was wearing whole looks composed solely of pieces i'd always considered 'background' (plainer clothing without much detail) - no 'frosting', as it were. it really helped me to expand my range into casual and more 'modern' looks that had formerly been beyond my grasp. i tried this as part of a challenge, working just with my existing wardrobe, and what i learned was completely unintentional - it definitely surprised me!

small changes in hair and makeup can make big differences - and hair and makeup are crucial to personal style. i'm glad you're expanding your style spectrum and having fun doing it!! steph

Yes! Looking at pictures of myself has facilitated a big change for me in terms of my perception of my body. I used to feel like my chest was super-huge, but now I can see objectively that it pretty much corresponds to the rest of my body and doesn't really look out of proportion.

I can understand a little. I started wearing scarves for the first time last winter and it opened up so many possibilities with my existing wardrobe. Such a simple accessory to completely change the way I viewed my clothes.

Great thread! I agree with Jonesy that looking at my photos was a real eye-opener. It helps so much with determining the proportions of an outfit. I keep a YLF folder on my computer with all the photos I post so I can go back over what works and what doesn't.

For me, it was dresses! This summer is the first time I've worn a dress in probably about a decade. I just never thought I could do them before, so I didn't even try. Come to find out, I love wearing dresses, and my husband finds it incredibly sexy. Who knew???? Let's just say we're both fans of this little change!

One of the things for me was wearing pearls. I had always associated them with more conservative kinds of style - and when I saw the knots and the loops and the double/triple wraps, it just opened up a whole new world for me! Now, I wear them without even thinking twice - lately my favorite look is attaching a brooch and wearing them as a bracelet!

Oh, Marley! What a fabulous idea! I have some vintage brooches that I love, but rarely wear. I love wearing bracelets, though, so that's a perfect solution!

My latest change has been to rotate my handbags more often. There's no point in me having more than one if I won't use them. I put my summer bags within easy access and am already using them all more often now.

/highfive! I love how much of an impact those small changes have. I experiment with this all the time, and some things stick with me and others do not; since they're small changes, they don't take a lot of commitment and are easy to either change back or plunge forward. I feel like everything since my "style epiphany" has been going down this path (a little too slowly for my taste!) but the major ones I'm happy with have been: swapping a lot of my black for white/gray this spring and summer, wearing lip tint then moving into brighter lipsticks, and most recently trying to take what I learned from the art challenge and bring it into my daily outfits (less matching, more pattern mixing, etc).
